Fake Grandson Calls Northbrook Woman, Vending Machine Attacked

The following information is from the Northbrook Police Department. An arrest is not an indication of guilt.

Vending machine damaged

A citizen walked into the park district building April 3 and informed them that he found a vending machine knocked over in the park and it appeared as if the glass had been kicked in. There was no estimate of the cost to repair the vending machine from the park district.      

Sports equipment stolen

The victim related that his black and white equipment bag was stolen along with GBN jerseys and lacrosse equipment April 2 in the 2300 block of Shermer Road. The estimated loss is approximately $400.

Retail theft

John Gratalo, 50, of Northbrook, attempted to leave a store in the 3400 block of Bayberry March 30 without paying for $28.85 worth of merchandise. He was stopped by security, taken into custody, processed and released on $1,500 bond with a May 1 court date.       

In a separate incident, the complainant reported that three people stole merchandise March 28 from the 1500 block of Lake Cook Road totaling $1,924.   

Grandson scam                                                                                            

A resident received a telephone call March 31 from a man claiming to be her grandson. The woman was aware of recent phone scams similar to this and gave the caller a fictitious name of "John" and that the caller acknowledged being him. The complainant then terminated the call.

Suspended drivers license

Karla Y. Deleon, 31, of Round Lake, was stopped for a traffic violation April 2 at 9:15 a.m. at Sanders and Lindenwood. Officers determined that her driver’s license was suspended. She was transported to the police department, processed and released on $2,000 bond with a May 8 court date.

Oscar J. Montenegro, 39, of Chicago, was stopped for a traffic violation April 1 at 1 a.m. at Willow Road and Interstate 294. Officers determined the he was driving with a suspended license. He was placed under arrest, transported to the police department, processed and released on $1,500 bond with a May 14 court date.                                                                            

Ronald L. Gustin, 44, of Batavia, was stopped for a traffic violation at 2:40 a.m. April 1 at Willow Road and Interstate 294. Officers determined that he was driving on a suspended license. He was placed under arrest, transported to the police department, processed and released on $1,500 bond with a May 14 court date.

Andel S. Tennant, 30, of Prospect Heights, was stopped for a traffic violation at Dundee Road and Ash Lane March 31 at 12:15 a.m.. Officers determined that his license was suspended. He was transported, processed and released on $1,500 bond with a May 14 court date.
