Found Phone Leads To Felony Theft Charge

The following report was provided by the Northbrook Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

On Sept. 10, Robert R. Lang II, 21, of Northbrook, was charged with Felony Disorderly Conduct and Felony Theft, according to police. Officers apprehended Lang after he went to the police station to report concerns that an iPhone he bought after meeting someone on Craigslist may be stolen, police say.

While officers were speaking to him, Lang then said he invented the story about meeting someone on Craigslist and actually found the phone in a green wallet he found in a parking, according to the police report.

After finding the phone, Lang tried to sell it to someone else, but got nervous when the buyer tried to verify with AT&T that it was not stolen, according to police. Lang told officers he decided then to visit the police station and invent the Craigslist story to find out if the phone had been reported stolen, police say.

The phone's original owner was contacted by police and she wished to sign complaints, according to police.
