Northbrook Resident Extinguishes Kitchen Fire

Someone on Techny Road contained burning paper towels in their kitchen using a fire extinguisher.

The following report appeared in the Village of Northbrook's weekly memo.

On Wednesday evening, March 27, a Northbrook resident on the 2000 block of Techny Road noticed a fire in the kitchen and extinguished it before extensive damage occurred.

When firefighters arrived, they could smell something burning from the street. The house had a fair amount of smoke or haze on the first floor with the doors and windows already opened. The homeowner stated that her young child placed a roll of paper towels on the counter top next to a candle and the entire roll caught on fire.

The paper towels were underneath a cabinet and caused some minor damage to the cabinet. The homeowner extinguished the fire with a dry chemical extinguisher. Firefighters checked for extension to the cabinet and the wall using a Thermal Imaging Camera but there was no extension.

Firefighters used a fan to help remove the smoke, and helped clean the dry chemical powder.

Northbrook Fire Prevention Bureau Director Kevin Frangiamore reminds residents to keep a fire extinguisher handy at home, to check it for pressure and to ensure that the hose is intact. It’s also important to replace fire extinguishers every five years.
