Northbrook Responds to Lightning Strike Fire and Garage Blaze

Northbrook's fire department sent firefighters out to respond to two blazes during the height of the storm Sunday night.

While thunder and heavy rains pummeled the area Sunday night, Northbrook firefighters went out in the storm to respond to two separate blazes.

Firefighters first responded to a garage fire that broke out about 9:55 p.m. in the 1900 block of Beechnut Road, according to Deputy Fire Chief Ron Schinleber.

“It appears to have been caused by some grease rags discarded in a garbage can,” Schinleber said.

The fire department sent five trucks to the Beechnut Road fire, located in the neighborhood known as Glenbrook Countryside, but, Schinleber said, “it was not a big situation.”

“We managed it, took care of it,” he said. “It wasn’t of any major consequence.”

The next fire the department responded to was a serious one, however. Northbrook sent one ladder truck from Beechnut Road directly to a fire that broke out in Glenview when lightning struck the roof of a condominium near Willow and Waukegan roads.

“That’s typical that they would call for one from another town,” Schinleber said.

At least four fire trucks from Glenview also responded to the blaze, which was contained to the roof of the four story building by about 11:20 p.m., .
