Firefighters from Northbrook, Glenview and Northfield responded to the home on Royal Ridge Drive around 7:30 or 8 a.m. Thursday, July 9, according to Deputy Chief Ron Schinleber.

Just before the fire, witnesses saw a large bolt of lightning strike in the area, and Northbrook's fire investigator concluded that the blaze was likely caused by lightning, Schinleber said.

"There was some smoke and flame in the attic, but they put it out with the pump cans," he added.

The strike caused a hole roughly big enough to put your hand through, he noted. Firefighters climbed the roof to put out the small fire and cover the hole with tarp.
