Hiding a Stolen Comforter on Your Person is Unwise, and Other Lessons from Criminals

A look at unusual crimes in our Patch region.

Local police departments provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt.

A woman came to the Skokie police station to report that her cousin’s ex-husband had been sending out wedding invitations saying that the two are getting married. The woman also told police that the man is “delusional” and that the alleged suspect has visited her parent’s home at least a dozen times, the report said.

A security agent for a Niles store saw a man steal a 32-inch television, according to police. Niles police showed the security agent a photo lineup, and he identified the man who allegedly took the television.

A Niles police detective knew that man was scheduled to appear in court on another case that day and took him into custody when he appeared there.

An unknown offender called a Morton Grove woman several times telling her she won $2.5 million. He then attempted to get the woman to send him money in order to claim the winnings.

A Mount Prospect woman was charged with retail theft after a security agent for a Niles store saw her selecting a comforter and curtains, then conceal the comforter on her person and the curtains in her purse, according to the report. She then allegedly left the store without paying for them.

Someone broke into a fur store’s van and stole three mink coats worth $3,000 while the vehicle was parked in the lot at Northbrook Court. 

A 34-year-old man from Virginia was stopped for speeding in Glencoe. Police discovered that the Cook County Sheriff’s Office had a warrant for his arrest from 1997. The charge on the warrant was for obstructing a court order.

A Mount Prospect man was arrested at Carson Pirie Scott in Wilmette after he bought a pair of pink slippers then allegedly attempted to leave the store without paying for $300 worth of merchandise, including two pairs of men's underwear, a bottle of perfume and a sport coat. According to police, Drake said he was getting items for his girlfriend.

A wallet and iPhone were reported stolen from a jacket that was hanging in the coatroom of a Northbrook church during a funeral.
