Turbulent Winds Rip Down Power Lines, Ignite Fire In Glenview

Overnight winds reached 60 mph in some areas.

You don't need us to tell you that it's windy out there.

Last night's strong gusts (up to 60 mph in certain areas) hit the north suburbs hard, leaving some residents without power and causing a fire in the 2300 block of Dewes Street in Glenview.

Witnesses say a power line came down, causing sparks that led to a backyard blaze. No further details about the fire are available this morning, but CBS 2 has reported there were no injuries.

In total, the wind knocked out power to about 31,000 ComEd customers in the Chicago area overnight, with about 680 in the northern burbs, according to he utility. The southern suburbs got it the worst, with nearly 3,000 outages. As of 6 a.m., only about 2,200 people were still without power.

While last night’s wind advisory expired at 5 a.m., today will still be plenty breezy, with winds traveling at 15 to 25 mph and gusts reaching 35 mph. Winds are expected to usher in a weekend cold front, so make sure to get out those coats!
