Northbrook to Consider More Resident-Friendly Way to Protect Vintage Trees

The Village Board will discuss the issue at 7:30 p.m., April 16 at the Village Hall.

Northbrook trustees are expected to review the tree protection and preservation ordinance at its next village board meeting on April 16 and make it more user-friendly and reasonable, Northbrook Star reported.

The village code currently doesn’t allow the removal of heritage trees from required side yards but have made some exceptions, which require residents use their wood for a better purpose than firewood and to pay a replacement fee that ranges from $150 to $350 per diameter inch if re-forestation was not practical, Northbrook Star reported.

The first heritage tree removal since 2006 could happen soon if the village approves removing a 150-year-old red oak tree on the 1300 block of Wendy Drive in Northbrook for the construction of a single-family house nearby. The tree had been previously damaged due to storms and the village would charge $8,000 to remove the red oak, using those funds to plant future parkway trees.
