One Lane Closed On Waukegan Due to Major Water Main Break

Public Works crews are working with IDOT to patch the road after a severe water main break flooded the roadway last night. Two southbound lanes and one northbound lane are open.

Around 8:30 p.m. Sunday night, a severe water main break closed down all four lanes of Waukegan Road between Shermer Road and Walters Avenue. As of 10 a.m. Monday, three of the four lanes were open and the village expected the road to be completely clear soon.

Last night, police noticed water surging up through the roadway. Its force was so severe that it buckled the pavement, according to Cheryl Fayne-dePersio, communications manager for the village of Northbrook.

The water main break on Waukegan road was one of nine that took place throughout the village, according to Paul Risinger, general operations superintendent with the public works department. The rest were on side streets and do not impact traffic significantly, he said.

“We’re still investigating at the water plant what caused it,” Risinger said. Typically, a series of breaks are caused by a spike in the system, and can be caused by weather. Last night’s storms could have been a factor, he said.

Risinger expected all four lanes of Waukegan Road to open up this morning. Crews had already repaired the water main break by 10 a.m. but were still patching the pavement. Repair work was already under way or completed on the other eight breaks, Risinger said.
