Two Iraq War Veterans Join Northbrook Fire Department

A total of four new firefighters were sworn into their new positions at the Northbrook Fire Department during Tuesday's regular board meeting.

The Northbrook Fire Department welcomed four new members last week. They were publically sworn in, before friends, family and the Village Board, during Tuesday night's regular meeting

"It's an exciting day for us, we're hiring two veterans, Iraqi war veterans with Donald and Louis," said Fire Chief Mark Nolan. Donald Carpenter and Louis Popp filled two of the department’s current fulltime firefighter/paramedic vacancies.

Nolan welcomed the new firefighters with a story to demonstrate Northbrook's welcoming and caring community, as he whitnessed after the 1999 death of the department's former assistant chief, Wayne Luecht.

"This board will take care of you, this fire department and this community will help take care of you," Nolan said.

Both Donald and Louis were ranked one and two (respectively) on the Department’s Firefighter/Paramedic Final Register of Eligibles List that was posted August 31, 2012.

The department also welcomed Ben Johnson and Brent Pfiffner, both filling vacancies within Northbrook Fire’s paid-on-call program.

"Ben is the son of a retired firefighter, Steve Johnson and Brent's grandparents lived here in town since the 1960s," Nolan said.
