Prairie Grass Cafe Fundraiser for District 28 Garden/Outdoor Classroom

Northbrook’s Prairie Grass Café is hosting a fundraiser on August 27 to support District 28’s new organic garden and outdoor classroom.
The Café, at 601 Skokie Boulevard, will donate 10 percent of all proceeds from brunch and dinner that day. The fundraiser is part of a national effort sponsored by Chef Alice Waters and the Chez Panisse Foundation to encourage more garden-based education in schools.
Schools across the national are investing in gardens to provide students with a learning experience that also promotes healthy eating, Superintendent Larry Hewitt explained. Elementary and junior high students will have the opportunity to learn life science, problem-solving and mathematical concepts in a “real world” garden classroom. They will also have a hands-on connection to the food cycle and will be able to participate in sustainable agriculture, playing a role in the garden’s development and maintenance.
The District is working with The Organic Gardener, Ltd., to plan, install, and maintain the garden. The garden will feature vegetables, herbs, fruit trees and vegetable-producing vines.
Prairie Grass serves brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on August 27. Reservations are recommended and may be made by calling (847) 205-4433.
