GBS Rocks Titan Telethon, Raises 80K

24-hour fundraiser benefits Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook

students and staff stayed well after the end of class Friday for the school's 24-hour Titan Telethon, a live telethon event benefitting . The goal: raise $50,000 to help with the organization's operating expenses.

This is the second time GBS has hosted the fundraiser and they more than exceeded expectations. With the help of incredible community support, students raised more than $80,000, Public Relations Assistant Jennifer Zimmerman told Patch Sunday morning.

The school plans to put it on every three years so students experience the telethon once as freshman and again as seniors, passing on the tradition to a new batch of students before graduating, organizers explained.

"To do it every year would be tough," said Television Instructor Mark Ferguson as he detailed the weeks of preparation that go into putting on the benefit. "My students are toast for another week after this."

Three years ago, the first time the telethon was held, Titans raised more than $100,000 to help with the construction of Youth Services' new building. This year, with no building to build, telethon organizers scaled back the goal a bit.

The telethon, which started Friday afternoon during school, featured a variety of programming. Alumni interviews, student performances, campus tours and specially produced clips were all part of the show. The telethon opened with a 12-minute lip-dub that can be viewed on the school's website.

"It's so wonderful the kids want to do this to help out the agency and other kids in the community," shared Nancy Bloom, Executive Director of Youth Services. "It's an honor and it gives me faith in the future."
