Scout Swimmers Earn Third Place Trophy at State

Lake Forest High School swimming team brings home first hardware in 10 years.

A complete team effort propelled the Lake Forest High School swimming to third place in the State Meet today at New Trier High School in Winnetka giving the Scouts their first trophy at the event in 10 years.

The Scouts entered the meet with a goal of coming home with hardware and that is what they did by scoring 90 points. They finished 12 ahead of fourth-place Libertyville and three behind runner-up Hinsdale Central. New Trier won its third straight title with 189 points.

“This was a 100 percent team effort,” Coach Cindy Dell said. “Our motto was no guts no glory all year and they gave it their all. I am blessed to be part of it. They all bought into the program from the start of the year.”

With 50 of the 90 points coming from the 400-yard freestyle and 200 medley relay teams of Peter Grumhaus, Colin Rowe, Bogdan Balteanu and Daniel Smith, the team aspect was on display. The Scouts were second in the 400, the days’ final event, in 3:04.01 and third in the medley with a 1:33.33 clocking. Relays court for twice the scoring as individual events.

Grumhaus added a pair of second place individual finishes with a 1:37.94 in the 200 freestyle and a 4:24.24 in the 500 freestyle, accounting for another 26 of the team’s points.

“I feel just awesome,” Grumhaus said after completing the 500, his second individual race of the day where he shaved two seconds off his preliminary time on Friday. “I went out hard and kept pace.” He then anchored the 400 relay team to its runner up medal. “I’m giving that one all I have left,” he added before rejoining his teammates.

Rowe added a fourth place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.77. “I felt no pressure,” he said. “I hoped to place as high as I could.”

Andrew Marsh finished eighth in the diving competition with 398.85 points and Smith swam to 12th in the 100 backstroke in 52.04. Patch will have a photo gallery and a video with Dell on Monday.
