Wescott Elementary Participates in Walk to School Day

Kids and parents are encouraged to wear green as they walk or bike to school on Wednesday, Oct. 3.

School busses will still be running and cars will (hopefully) start on Wednesday morning, but schools across the country are encouraging kids and parents to lay off the gas pedal for a day and walk to school. Northbrook's Wescott Elementary is among the school's participating — though anyone in Northbrook can certainly join on Wednesday, Oct. 3.

Walk to School Day began in the United States in 1997. Organized by the Partnership for a Walkable America, the annual event is meant to build awareness for the need for walkable communities.

When the United Kingdom and Canada introduced their own Walk to School Days in 2000, the event went international and has only grown from there. Today, it's celebrated in more than 40 countries, according to the International Walk to School website
