Northbrook Native Drafted by NHL

JT Compher was drafted Sunday by the Buffalo Sabres.

JT Compher, a Northbrook native and University of Michigan hockey player, was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday, according to the University of Michigan's website.

Compher, 18, a 6-foot, 165-pound center, was picked in the second round as the 35th overall draft pick.

According to the University of Michigan, "He was the captain of the Gold Medal United States National Team Development Program (NTDP) international team this past year, and he led the NTDP-U18 team in point-per-game average even though an injury sidelined him for some of the season."

The NHL website has several interesting facts about Compher, including that in 2011, his father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He had successful surgery, and "Compher decided to help raise funds at a NTDP game to benefit prostate cancer awareness: 'I wanted to do something. There was so much support from all my friends and everyone in the town.'"

The NHL website also states that Compher's favorite TV shows are Friday Night Lights and Entourage and that his goal celebration is, "one knee, fist pump”
