Spartan Roundup 10/17: Girls Volleyball, XC, Tennis Have State Champs In Their Sights

Glenbrook North's girls tennis won its sectional while girls volleyball and cross country wrapped up conference championships.

FOOTBALL - The banged up Spartans were officially eliminated from playoff contention with a 14-7 loss at Highland Park Friday night. With multiple key players out with injuries the Spartans gave a good effort but didn't have enough fire power to top the Giants (5-3, 4-0 Central Suburban League North). Curt Petty connected with Tyler Ponticelli for GBN's only score of the game to tie it at 7, but the Giants took the lead for good in the fourth quarter. GBN (3-5, 2-2) closes out its season on homecoming against 1-7 Maine East.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL - Following an ugly and forgettable 25-2, 25-23 loss at Lake Zurich on Monday the Spartan volleyball team regrouped for a conference clinching win at Highland Park on Thursday. GBN topped HP 25-18, 25-17 to improve to 17-6 and 8-0 in the CSL North, guaranteeing them at least a share of the conference title. Whitney Landman had a team-high eight kills. The Spartans have two chances to seal the outright title, Tuesday at Deerfield and Thursday against Maine East, before beginning regional play the following week.

GIRLS TENNIS - GBN had a successful weekend at , taking first place and qualifying both doubles teams and both singles players. Juniors Anna Zelechonok and Katrine Zhadovich won the doubles tournament and expect to be among the contenders at state following last year's quarterfinal showing. While Zelechonok and Zhadovich expect to lead the team's push for a top ten finish, they won't have to do it alone. Miriam Mikhelson and Lisa Silshtut were runners up in doubles while Elizabeth Sak and Vicki Olejniczak finished top four in singles to also advance to the state tournament, which begins Thursday.

BOYS GOLF - Nick Jan was the at the state tournament following a disappointing fifth place team finish at the Fremd Sectional at Hilldale Golf Course in Hoffman Estates on Monday. Jan shot a first round 80, but came back strong with a second round 76, tying for the fifth best round of the day. His two round total of 156 earned him a tie for 13th, a nice jump from his 31st place finish a year ago.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY - Ellery Marrinan took the individual title for the second year in a row and helped the team to first place at the CSL North meet Saturday at GBN. Katherine Weber took second and was followed by teammate Allie Herriott. The girls begin the push to return to the state meet at the Loyola Regional this Saturday at Harms Woods in Niles.

GBN is now 3-0 in the Metro North and 7-5-2 overall with a big conference match up against Stevenson coming this Wednesday.
