Spartan Roundup 10/24: Tens for Girls Tennis and Volleyball, Football Wins Homecoming

Glenbrook North girls volleyball completed a 10-0 conference season while the girls tennis team earned a top ten finish in the state tournament.

FOOTBALL - A over Maine East marked the end of the Spartans' season. At 4-5, GBN didn't qualify for the playoffs, but the seniors were happy to go out on a win. Among the seniors were quarterback Curt Petty, who threw six touchdown passes, and Jason Scholl, who caught two touchdowns. Senior wide receivers Chad Bruce and Trevor Ponticelli each had a touchdown reception. Junior Grant Rushing also had three touchdowns in his return from injury.

GIRLS TENNIS - The girls acheived their goal of finishing in the top ten at the state tournament, tying for eighth with 12 points. The back draw was canceled due to weather on Thursday. Juniors Anna Zelechonok and Katrine Zhadovich made it to the fourth round of the doubles draw before running into defending state champions Marika Cusick and Caroline Lorenzini of Hinsdale Central. Cusick and Lorenzini beat Zelechonok and Zhadovich 6-2, 6-3 and went on to retain their state title. The other doubles team of Miriam Mikhelson and Lisa Silshtut made it to the third round. On the singles side, Elizabeth Sak won her first match before losing to Mundelein's Ari Dechter while Vicki Olejniczak got knocked out in the first round.

BOYS SOCCER - GBN's season came to an end in the semifinal of the New Trier Regional on Tuesday. The No. 6 seed Spartans lost 2-0 to the No. 10 Trevians. The Spartans (9-9-2) struggled to get opportunities on goal against the hosts and conceded a pair of second half goals.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL - The Spartans wrapped up a 10-0 conference season with wins over Deerfield (25-20, 25-16) and Maine East (25-17, 25-13) last week and compete in regional action at Evanston this week. GBN (18-6) starts the playoffs against the same team, Maine East, that they closed out the regular season with. The No. 5 seed Spartans will take on the No. 10 Blue Demons on Tuesday with a possible meeting with the No. 2 seed and host Evanston in Thursday's final.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY - Danny Cheung advanced from the Loyola Regional at Harms Woods in Skokie by finishing third among non-advancing teams. The Spartans took eighth place, one spot short of qualifying for the Niles West sectional, led by Cheung's 35th place finish.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY - The girls fared better at the Loyola Regional, taking third and advancing to sectionals. Ellery Marrinan finished sixth and Katherine Weber, Val Bobart and Allie Herriott gave the Spartans an unmatched four runners in the top ten. GBN will compete in the Niles West Sectional on Saturday.

BOYS HOCKEY - Glenbrook North picked up a huge win over Metro North rival Stevenson, winning 4-2 on Wednesday. The Spartans are now 4-0 in league play and 8-5-2 overall. This week they take on Fenwick and New Trier White.
