Spartan Roundup 10/10: Boys Golf Wins Regional, Girls Tennis 2nd in Conference

Glenbrook North football also won its second game in a row.

FOOTBALL - Despite running back Grant Rushing being out with an injury, Glenbrook North was still able to earn its second straight win Thursday night. The Spartans topped visiting Maine West 21-14 on a last-minute touchdown run from Jason Scholl. Quarterback Curt Petty threw for a touchdown and led the Spartans down the field for the game-winning drive. GBN (3-4, 2-1 Central Suburban League North) has a big game at Highland Park (3-0 in the CSL North) this Friday.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL - The Spartans won a pair of conference games to improve to 7-0 in the CSL North. They supported breast cancer awareness by wearing pink jerseys and just before the football game. Lauren Emmert and Patricia Hare led a balanced offensive attack in a match where the Spartans showed off some depth. Earlier in the week they swept Niles North 25-20, 25-17. GBN (16-6) received the No. 5 seed in the Glenbrook South Sectional and will travel to No. 2 Evanston for regionals. First, they have to finish off the conference title. This week they travel to Lake Zurich today and Highland Park on Thursday.

BOYS GOLF - Thanks in part to a two-under 70 from Nick Hardy, the Spartans captured their second straight regional title Tuesday at Deerfield Golf Course. GBN posted a 293, beating Prospect by nine strokes for the win and Hardy took the first-place individual medal. Jon Goldstein (74), Harrison Marick (77), Nick Jan (78) and Jae Lee (79) also broke 80. The team heads to Hilldale Golf Course for sectional play today to try to earn a return trip to the state tournament.

GIRLS GOLF - Ashley Hong and Dakota Karson qualified for sectionals, but the Spartans took fifth at the regional at the Bridges of Poplar Creek. Hong posted a 79 to tie for sixth place while Karson's 83 was good for 11th and was the fourth best at-large score. The two juniors will compete at today at sectionals.

GIRLS TENNIS - The Spartans took second at the CSL North tournament Wednesday at GBN. Anna Zelechonok and Katrine Zhadovich won at No. 1 doubles and Miriam Mikhelson and Lisa Shilstut took the title at No. 2. The team heads to sectionals Saturday at Maine East.

BOYS HOCKEY - Glenbrook North hockey began its six-month long season in mid-September and is off to a 4-5-2 start. The Spartans, last year's state runner up, beat Warren 4-2 on Wednesday to start Metro North play with a win. This week they have Metro North games against St. Viator on Wednesday and at Deerfield on Saturday.
