Spartan Roundup 10/2: Boys Golf Wins Conference, Football Ends Losing Streak

Glenbrook North football also got back on track and girls cross country moved to 5-0 in conference.

FOOTBALL – Glenbrook North ended its three game losing streak with a 20-6 win against Niles North in the Vikings' homecoming Friday night. The Vikings scored first, but the Spartans dominated the final three quarters to pick up the Central Suburban League North win. Chad Bruce caught two touchdowns from senior quarterback Curt Petty. Trevor Ponticelli returned an interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the game. GBN (2-4, 1-1) will look to build a winning streak when Maine West (0-6, 0-2) comes to Northbrook on Thursday.

BOYS GOLF – Led by an even par 72 from Nick Jan, and the outright conference title at Glencoe Golf Club on Monday. Jon Goldstein, Brian Ohr, Harrison Marick and Nick Hardy also had sub-80 rounds to finish in the top ten at the meet. They kept the momentum rolling by winning the Highland Park Invite and the New Trier Invite, a field including defending state champ Lake Forest. The Spartans' march back to state begins Tuesday with a Class 3A Regional at Mission Hills Country Club.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY – The girls runners took a big step to a conference title by going . Sophomore Ellery Marrinan won the race and six of the top seven finishers were Spartans. At 5-0 in conference, GBN is in good shape heading into the conference meet, which is two weeks away. The Spartans took fourth at the Peoria Invite against a tough 47-team field over the weekend.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY – The boys went 1-2 at the same quad to move to 1-4 in conference. Dan Cheung and David Neal finished in the top ten in Highland Park. They took 42nd out of 55 in Peoria, led by Cheung's 16:20.70 time.

BOYS SOCCER – Thanks to goals from Ryan Bunney and Mikail Siddiki, the Spartans beat Maine East 2-1 on Tuesday to pick up their first conference win of the season. They spent the weekend in St. Louis and went 2-1 in the Gateway City Soccer Classic. They beat Mater Dei (IN) 3-1 on Friday and Peoria-area Morton 2-1 on Saturday before losing to Eureka (MO) 1-0 in the Bracket C final. The playoff draw was announced this week and GBN (8-7-2, 1-3-1) drew the No. 6 seed in the Evanston Sectional. They will play at No. 10 New Trier, where the Spartans won 1-0 earlier this year, in the regional semifinal round Tuesday, Oct. 18.
