Spartan Roundup 11/21: Horwitz Earns 3 Medals at State

Boys hockey and girls basketball on winning runs heading into Thanksgiving action.

GIRLS SWIMMING: Stephanie Horwitz ended her Glenbrook North career with an individual medal in the 200 freestyle race and two more in Spartan relays that placed in the top ten at the at New Trier this weekend. Horwitz qualified for Saturday's finals with a 12th place finish in the 200 free and took 24th in the 500 free, failing to advance out of the prelims. Junior Molly Orbon earned 17th in the 200 individual medley and senior diver Jessie Dinelli took 20th. Horwitz, Orbon, junior Christina Park and freshman Abigail Rosenberg teamed up for ninth place in the 200 free relay and Horwitz, Orbon, Rosenberg and freshman Colleen Doolan tied for tenth in the 400 free relay. GBN's Saturday points earned them a tie for 19th in the team standings.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Thanks in large part to senior transfer Gracie Sanchez the Spartans are off to a . GBN went 3-0 in pool play of the Mundelein Turkey Tournament with wins over Grayslake North (54-50), Highland Park (60-41) and Mundelein (48-38). Sanchez, who is committed to Division II Grand Valley State, has provided an inside presence to open up the outside for guards like senior . After beating Prairie Ridge 46-35 on Saturday, the Spartans (4-0) have a chance to win the tournament on Wednesday against Carmel.

BOYS HOCKEY: The Spartans' ran their unbeaten streak to 11 this week with a 4-1 win over Warren and a pair of ties, and 4-4 at Highland Park. GBN is 17-6-5 and 10-0-1 in the Metro North following the tie with the Giants, who sit second in the conference behind the Spartans. Next up is the Thanksgiving rivalry game at Glenbrook South on Wednesday.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Junior center Andrew McAuliffe and the Spartans begin the season Monday against reigning Class 2A state champion Hales Franciscan in Niles West's Billy Schnurr Thanksgiving Tournament. GBN also plays Hersey, Lake Forest and Niles West in the tournament.
