Spartan Roundup 11/28: Thanksgiving Tournament Wrap-ups

Both basketball teams and the boys hockey team completed busy weeks filled with tournament action.

BOYS BASKETBALL - opened the season by winning Niles West's Billy Schnurr Thanksgiving Tournament with a 4-0 record. , the reigning Class 2A state champ, 53-43 in the first game and followed up with wins over Hersey (67-39), Lake Forest (50-36) and the host Wolves (55-39). Junior Kurt Karis won the tournament MVP by averaging 12.5 points and playing strong at point guard. Junior center Andrew McAuliffe was also named to the all-tournament team, averaging 15.75 points per game after scoring just five against Hales due to foul trouble. Up next: Friday at Waukegan.

GIRLS BASKETBALL - The Spartans' bid to win the Mundelein Turkey Tournament came up short after losing 47-34 to Carmel on Wednesday. North (4-1) lost the tournament on a tiebreaker. Senior Gracie Sanchez scored in the teens each game and led the team with 16 PPG. Senior (10.6 PPG) and junior Rachel Dress joined Sanchez on the all-tournament team. Up next: Tuesday vs. Waukegan, Thursday at Maine East and Saturday at Elk Grove.

BOYS HOCKEY - Glenbrook South was no match for the Spartans in the annual Thanksgiving rivalry game. GBN picked up a in front of a full house at the Glenview Ice Center on Wednesday. Ryan Maksimovic scored the first goal of the game in the second period and the Spartans ran away with the game after that. Eric Anderson and Garrison Sanipass each scored twice. After the holiday, North took second at Stevenson's Thanksgiving invite. The Spartans won pool D by beating Marian (IN) 5-2, Naperville North 6-1 and Crystal Lake South 5-0. They romped Providence 5-1 in the semifinals, but dropped the final 2-1 to Rockford. The loss snapped the Spartans' (21-7-4, 11-0-1) 16-game unbeaten streak. Up next: Wednesday vs. Deerfield.
