Spartan Roundup 12/19: Basketball Teams Share Conference Leads

Wins over Highland Park jumped the boys and girls basketball teams into a tie for first in the CSL North.

BOYS BASKETBALL - Even without injured center Andrew McAuliffe, won its first two home games of the season. North beat Conant 53-24 on Tuesday and followed that up with a 49-36 win over Highland Park Friday night. Jason Markus made three three-pointers in the first half against the Giants to spark the Spartans to a 28-8 lead. The win over Highland Park vaulted GBN (8-1, 2-1) into a four-way tie for the Central Suburban League North lead. Up next: Proviso West Holiday Tournament Dec. 27-30.

GIRLS BASKETBALL - The girls hoops team is also tied for the CSL North lead following a 45-39 win at Highland Park. Gracie Sanchez scored 15 points and Rachel Blitt had 10 to put the Spartans in a three-way tie for the league lead. The Spartans (8-4, 3-1) dropped a game to Evanston, 59-38, earlier in the week. Up next: St. Viator Invite pool play Wednesday-Friday.

BOYS BOWLING - , in its first year as an IHSA-registered team, lost to Deerfield 3182-3022 Wednesday at Brunswick Zone in Deerfield. The Spartans outscored the Warriors 1038-987 in the third and final game, but had too big of a deficit to make up from the first two games. Freshman Corey Kahen rolled a 267 in the final game, the highest Spartan game of the night, and posted a three-game average of 226. Up next: Jan. 11 vs. St. Patrick.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS - With a 35.30 all-around from Carli Betman, North beat Maine West 126.20-124.70 to improve to 2-0 in conference duals. The Spartans posted a 121.20 total at the Lyons Invite, good for fifth place. Up next: Jan. 7 at Evanston Invite.

WRESTLING - After dropping a dual to Deerfield 57-13 on Thursday the Spartans took 17th out of 19 teams at the 48th Annual Rus Erb Tournament at Glenbrook South over the weekend. Logan Weintraub (152 pounds), Ryan Bloom (195) and Max Rothchild (220) placed in the top eight of their weightclasses. Up next: Jan. 6 vs. Highland Park.

BOYS HOCKEY - North tied Highland Park 1-1 in a match up of the top two teams in the Metro North on Wednesday. GBN (27-9-7, 13-0-3) followed that up with a 6-2 win against Glenbrook South in a HIT game. Up next: holiday tournament in Bensenville Dec. 26-29.
