Spartan Roundup 9/12: Girls Volleyball Wins Invite

Glenbrook North football took another loss, but the volleyball team had a positive week.

FOOTBALL - It was rivalry night in Northbrook Friday. Glenbrook South came to town and left with a . The Spartans struck first via Curt Petty's interception returned for a touchdown and Jason Scholl had a 47-yard touchdown reception from Petty right before halftime, but it wasn't enough. The Titans' physical running game wore down . The Spartans (1-2) travel to Evanston this Friday in need of a win.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL - The Spartans rebounded from a pair of losses during the week (25-18, 25-18 at Libertyville on Tuesday and 25-18, 25-17 at GBS on Thursday) by winning the Vernon Hills Invite over the weekend. On a busy Saturday, won five matches and didn't lose a game en route to the title of the eight-team field. In pool play the Spartans swept Buffalo Grove, Carmel and Jones to advance to the semifinals. There, they took down Jacobs 25-20, 25-21 to earn a rematch against Buffalo Grove in the final. The Spartans swept the Bison for the second time that day, 25-23, 25-23, to win the tournament. (9-5) will begin conference play this week with away matches against Niles North on Monday and Maine West on Wednesday.

BOYS SOCCER - surprised New Trier with a 1-0 win in Northfield Tuesday night thanks to a Michael Simon goal. Unfortunately, they were unable to get two quality wins in a row, losing 2-0 Saturday at Lake Forest. The Spartans, now 3-2-1, have a big week ahead of them. They have three Central Suburban League North matches: Tuesday at Niles North, Thursday vs. Maine West and Saturday at Highland Park.

GIRLS TENNIS - The doubles team of Anna Zelechonok and Katrine Zhadovich won the Deerfield Invitational over the weekend. Zelechonok and Zhadovich made it to the quarterfinals of the state tournament last year as sophomores. Showings like this prove they are among the state's top doubles teams once again. The Spartans have CSL North matches against Deerfield and Maine East this week.
