Spartan Roundup: Aug. 29

The first week of school means Spartan athletics are back!

FOOTBALL – The season opener didn’t go as planned for the Spartans, . The Huskies shut down the GBN offense in the first half and took a 14-0 lead into halftime. Grant Rushing scored a 53-yard touchdown on a fake punt in the third quarter and Chad Bruce caught a 22-yard pass from quarterback Curt Petty to tie it at 14 in the fourth, but Hersey took the lead on a late touchdown and came away with the surprise win. GBN (0-1) visits Lane Tech this Friday.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL – Despite a sloppy first game against Warren, the Spartans recovered and took down the Blue Devils 19-25, 25-23, 25-20 to start the season on the right foot Thursday night. Standout junior outside hitter Patricia Hare will lead the offense and sophomores Kate Kamin and Lauren Emmert are among seven girls 5-11 or taller on the team. The Spartans (1-0) host Mundelein on Tuesday before competing in the New Trier Invite this weekend.

BOYS SOCCER – After a tough opener against a good Prospect team, which the on Monday, GBN bounced back with a 4-0 victory against Foreman Thursday. The Spartans (1-1) lost 12 seniors from last year’s conference winning squad, but coach Paul Vignocchi expects the less experienced team to grow as the year goes on. This week they visit Rolling Meadows on Tuesday and host Carmel on Thursday.

BOYS GOLF - The Spartans are off to a hot start to the season following their fourth place finish at state last season. With invite wins at Rolling Green and Bloomington and a second place finish to defending state champ Lake Forest at the Glenbrook South Invite, the team looks to be among the state contenders yet again. Juniors Nick Jan and Jon Goldstein and sophomores Nick Hardy and Brian Ohr are among the team's top returners. They have their first CSL North dual against Deerfield on Monday and compete in the Buffalo Grove Invite Saturday.
