Girls gymnastics picks up conference win; basketball teams prepare for holiday tournaments.

Boys basketball: The hoops squad remained undefeated with a . Peter Szostak had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Once again, the Spartans' size advantage was a big reason behind their success.  GBN (8-0, 3-0) has a week off before competing in the loaded Proviso West Holiday Tournament. The boys will face Morton in the first round. Among the 16-team field, GBN is one of seven teams in the top 20 of both the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times rankings.

Girls basketball:  The tough season continued for the girls with a . Junior guard Nora O'Neill led the team with 12 and Rachel Blitt had 10. The girls are 1-11 on the year. Inexperience and injuries have made it an uphill battle. The Spartans open the St. Viator Snowflake Tournament Tuesday with a game against Northside Prep.

Girls gymnastics: The gymnasts 123.35-114.85 Wednesday to move to 3-0 in dual meets. The Spartans graduated four seniors from last year's squad so they are relying on a lot of underclassmen. Sophomore Miriam Mikhelson had the high all-around score at 31.90.

Hockey: The Spartans had a tough time closing out games last week. In a pair of Metro North games against Highland Park and Glenbrook South, GBN blew multiple- goal leads in the third period and was forced to settle for a tie. With a 3-0 lead after two periods, the Spartans tied Highland Park 3-3. Against rival GBS on Friday, it was deja vu. GBN lead 2-0 heading into the third period, but tied 2-2. This week powerhouses Loyola Gold and Fenwick come to the Northbrook .
