Spartan Roundup Feb. 14

In Glenbrook North athletics, wrestler Andrew Maksimovic earns a trip to state and girls basketball team closes out regular season.

BOYS BASKETBALL - As if inconsistent play on the court wasn't frustrating enough, Glenbrook North is now dealing with injuries and the flu. After winning 54-45 at Maine West on Friday, Glenbrook North lost at Conant in overtime on Saturday. The win over Maine West keeps the Spartans tied for first in the Central Suburban League North at 7-2, but they were shorthanded in the . Tommy Hanrahan and Ethan Schmidt didn't play while Andrew McAuliffe, who scored 18 points at Conant, Peter Szostak and Jordan Liss are playing at less than full health. The Spartans (16-7) have a couple weeks before the playoffs to recover.

On the topic of playoffs, the seedings were announced this week. GBN earned the five seed in the New Trier Sectional and was paired with four seed Niles North for the Glenbrook North Regional (see Class 4A Pairings here). Ross Jacobson ranked the Vikings and Spartans as the entering this weekend and both regular season affairs have been classics with the home team winning both times.

GIRLS BASKETBALL - The regular season came to a close with a pair of extremely close losses. First, the Spartans fell to Northside College Prep 48-44 in overtime on Tuesday. Then on Friday, Maine West left Northbrook with a 52-50 win. It's been that kind of season for the girls. The good news is the playoffs are here and all is forgotten this time of year. The 13 seed Spartans (4-23) take on 20 seed Schurz at Resurrection on Tuesday and the winner gets Lincoln Park the next day.

WRESTLING - Senior Andrew Maksimovic earned his trip to state. After just missing out a year ago, he took the step forward this year by finishing fourth at 140 pounds to earn the trip to Champaign. Adam Pines went 0-2 at 152 pounds. IllinoisMatMen.com has the full sectional results and the IHSA has Maksimovic's draw for the state tournament.

HOCKEY - GBN continues to march through the Metro North Playdowns undefeated. On Wednesday they tied Glenbrook South 1-1 and took down conference champ Stevenson 4-2 on the road Saturday. Tommy Washburn had two goals and Jack Day scored one and had an assist. Jared Fisher netted the other goal. After a scoreless first period, the teams erupted for five goals in the second with GBN leading 3-2. The Spartans are now 3-0-1 in the playdowns, sitting pretty in first place.

With one game left against Lake Forest on Wednesday, GBN (38-5-11) is assured of a place in the Scholastic Cup, which begins this weekend, with seeding still at stake. They will also play in Thursday's semifinal of the High School Invitational Tournament against New Trier Green if Barrington ties or loses to Sandburg on Monday.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS - The season came to an end at the Niles North Sectional on Thursday. Freshman Sari Grad, who advanced to sectionals as the last at-large in the all around competition, finished 27th with a score of 31.575. On individual events, Grad finished 32nd on vault and sophomore Miriam Mikhelson finished 29th on vault and 28th on uneven bars.

BOYS SWIMMING - The Spartans finished second at the CSL North meet to Niles North. The team of Brian Roytman, Sean Sullivan, Jason Chen and Matt Bacinich won the 200-yard freestyle relay. This Saturday, GBN hosts its own sectional.
