Spartan Roundup Feb. 28

The winter sports are winding down, but a few GBN squads are still marching on.

HOCKEY - Glenbrook North lost a heartbreaker in the Scholastic Cup semifinal, 2-1 to Barrington on Wednesday. The Spartans took a lead into the third period thanks to a power play goal from Seth Gideon, but they gave up two late goals including one on a penalty shot. Coach Mark Brunner called it one of the toughest losses he's been involved in. The Spartans turned it around Sunday in the Blackhawk Cup. They picked up a with goals coming from Gideon, Garrison Sanipass, Jonathan Gauger and Jared Fisher. GBN, the five seed in the state tournament, will play the winner of Loyola and Marist in the quarterfinal on Saturday.

BOYS SWIMMING - The swim team had three relay teams and three individuals compete at state this weekend at New Trier. Jason Chen took 38th in the 200-yard freestyle, Sean Sullivan got 42nd in the 200 individual medley and Matt Bacinich earned 29th in the 100 free. As for the relays, GBN took 25th in the 200 medley relay, 19th in the 200 free relay and 24th in the 400 free relay.

BOYS BASKETBALL - The hoops team lost another close one, this time at Niles West by a score of 59-55 in the regular season finale. GBN's record is 18-8 heading into the playoffs after an 11-1 start. Seniors Tommy Hanrahan and Peter Szostak as well as sophomore Andrew McAuliffe earned all-conference honors. The trio will hope to lead the team to a regional win at home. They will face the winner of Mather and Elk Grove in the regional semifinal on Tuesday.
