Spartan Roundup Feb. 6

Playoffs are starting in the winter sports. See how GBN's teams are doing.

BOYS BASKETBALL - The inconsistent play of the Spartans continued last week. GBN snapped a three-game losing streak on Friday with a . Tommy Hanrahan made five three-pointers to score 17 points and Peter Szostak scored seven points in the first quarter to help the Spartans jump out to a 22-5 lead. Then, on Saturday Warren came to Northbrook and showed why they are a highly ranked team in the area. The to hand GBN its second home loss of the season. With only two weeks left in the regular season, the conference race remains tight. GBN (15-6) and Niles North both sit at 6-2 in the Centraul Suburban League North. The Spartans have a pair of road games coming up, at Maine West Friday and at Conant Saturday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL - The long season continued for the Spartans. They got pounded 76-43 at Highland Park on Friday. With a 4-21 record, the upcoming playoffs give them the opportunity to end the season on a better note. First, they host Northside College Prep on Tuesday and close out conference play against Maine West on Friday. After that they will play Schurz at Resurrection High School on Feb. 15. The Spartans are the 13 seed in the 20-team Maine East Sectional.

HOCKEY - GBN closed out HIT play with a 7-0 throttling of Stevenson on Monday. Due to the weather, the remaining games in pool play had to be rescheduled so the Spartans will have to wait a bit longer to see if they make it into the semifinals. They continued the Metro North Playdowns with a 1-0 win over St. Viator on Saturday. The Spartans are now 2-0 in the playdowns with three remaining. This week GBN (37-5-10) hosts Glenbrook South on Wednesday and visits Stevenson on Saturday.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS - None of the Spartans advanced automatically, but a pair of gymnasts made the unofficial cut for sectionals . Sophomore Miriam Mikhelson advanced on vault and the uneven bars while freshman Sari Grad advanced on vault. GBN finished fourth out of four teams with a score of 122.225. The sectional meet is also at Niles North and will take place on Thursday.

WRESTLING - Three Spartans qualified for sectionals out of the Niles North Regional. Andrew Maksimovic took the regional title at 140 pounds by defeating Prospect's Joe Randazzo in the final. Maksimovic just missed making it to state last year, but appears to be in good position to do so this year. Jim Flanaghan took fourth at 135 and Adam Pines grabbed third at 152 to also qualify for this Saturday's sectional at Barrington. As a team, GBN finished sixth out of ten teams.
