Spartan Roundup June 6: Baseball Hits Title Road Today

The school year is over, but the team stays a contender in the state championship's elite eight.

BASEBALL - It was a memorable week for Glenbrook North (GBN). Alex Hermeling started things off with a strong performance in a for a regional title Memorial Day at Evanston. Pete Resnick, in his first start of the year, kept the pitching flowing with a  for a 3-0 win in the sectional semifinal.

In Saturday's sectional final against top-seeded Leyden, the No. 2 seed Spartans' offense led the way to victory. Jack Day went 4-4 and Brett Synek, Sean Thomas and Ryan Slawin all had big offensive days in the 15-6 win. It's the programs first sectional title since 1974.

In the elite eight, the Spartans (33-3) will play Prospect at 4:30 p.m. Monday. The Class4A Super-Sectional is being held at Road Ranger Stadium in Rockford.

SOFTBALL - in sectional play against Glenbrook South on Thursday. The Titans jumped ahead early and held on for the 7-1 win to advance to the sectional final. Jenny McTague drove in Katie Riley for GBN's only run in the seventh. Despite the loss, things are looking up for next year. Lindsay Synek is the only senior on the team. The Spartans finished 16-11-1.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL - GBN lost in the sectional final for the third year in a row after 25-19, 25-22, avenging an early season loss. Luke Jacobson led the Spartans with five kills. With a 30-9 record, a conference title, a regional title and the program's sixth straight trip to the sweet 16, GBN had a lot to be proud of this season.
