Spartan Roundup March 28

The hockey team played at nationals and the lacrosse teams are off to winning starts.

HOCKEY - The Spartans had one last hurrah for the season, participating in USA Hockey's 2011 High School National Championships this weekend in Bensenville and made it to the semifinals. In pool play GBN beat Santa Margarita Catholic (CA) 3-2, lost to Southlake Carroll (TX) 3-2 in a shootout and beat Long Beach (NY) 7-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. There, the Spartans beat Notre Dame (AZ) 4-3 in two overtimes on Saturday. Tommy Washburn scored the game winner. Later that day in the semifinals, it was familiar foe New Trier Green. GBN fell to the Trevians again, this time by a score of 6-2. New Trier went on to win the tournament for the second straight year. Sophomore Garrison Sanipass had four goals and five assists in the tournament. Washburn had four goals and Ben Stein scored three.

BASEBALL - On Monday GBN opened the season with a 3-1 win at Notre Dame in the debut of coach Dom Savino. Sean Thomas got the win with five hitless innings of work. Wednesday's scheduled home opener against Lake Zurich was canceled due to weather.

GIRLS SOCCER - GBN improved to 2-1 on the season with a 5-0 thumping of Resurrection Wednesday. Freshman Rachel Hirshman scored twice for the Spartans. After a week off, they host New Trier April 6 and Vernon Hills April 8.

BOYS LACROSSE - A 15-3 win over Conant at Techny Fields on Monday gave GBN a 2-0 start to the season. It was the team's second win by double digits after beating Highland Park 17-7 March 17. The Spartans next game will be a tough test April 6 against New Trier.

GIRLS LACROSSE - The girls are also off to a 2-0 start. They dominated Regina 21-3 on Tuesday and picked up a tight win at Eagles Co-op 15-14. They return to action April 7 at Glenbrook South.
