Spartan Roundup May 30

Boys volleyball and softball won regional titles.

SOFTBALL - Freshman Ashley Gruenberg to give the No. 6 Spartans a 4-0 upset over No. 3 Maine West in the Glenbrook North Regional final Saturday. Gruenberg allowed just three hits in her dominant performance. Jenny McTague scored twice and Colleen Ahern drove in two runs on a seventh inning double. GBN (16-10-1) beat Northside Prep 6-1 Friday in the semifinal. Next up is the sectional semifinal versus No. 2 Glenbrook South Thursday at Duke Childs Field in Winnetka.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL - The Spartans cruised through the first three rounds of the playoffs. No. 2 GBN took the program's ninth consecutive regional title at Niles West with sweeps over No. 14 Notre Dame (25-18, 25-15) and No. 7 Niles West (25-14, 25-16). In the sectional semifinal Friday, the  25-18. Senior libero Connor Bolan said the Spartans aren't satisfied with the playoff run yet. In order to achieve their goal of making it to state, North (30-8) will have to beat No. 1 New Trier, whom they .

GIRLS SOCCER - An 11th minute goal from Lake Forest was enough to in the sectional semifinal. Despite setting a school record for wins (19) and winning the progam's second regional title, the 1-0 loss was devastating to the girls. Coach Paul Vignocchi said that seniors Stephanie Murthey, Ashley Kamin, Casey Kurz, Jen Peterson, Dayna Abramson and Melissa Sawyer left their mark on the program with the regional championship and two conference titles.

BOYS TENNIS - Brian Levitas went 3-2 at the state tournament this weekend. The senior picked up a pair of straight set wins to advance to the third round where he was bounced by Rafe Mosetick of Hinsdale Central 6-0, 6-2. Levitas went 1-1 in the consolation bracket to finish his high school career. Making the 5th round of the consolation bracket is his best finish at the state tournament after losing a round earlier the last two years.

BOYS LACROSSE - Two weeks after beating Naperville North 15-9 in the regular season, the No. 11 Huskies stunned the No. 6 Spartans 9-8 in the second round of the state tournament. GBN (15-4) fell behind early, but rallied in the fourth quarter to cut a 9-4 lead to 9-8 with 4:41 left in the game. Ryan Maksimovic scored all four of his goals in the fourth quarter to spark the comeback effort. Afterwards, the emotional Spartans talked about and how much they will miss that. GBN beat Conant 13-8 in the first round to advance to Friday's second round.

BASEBALL - Weather pushed back the Evanston regional final to Monday, but the Spartans beat St. Patrick 9-4 on Friday to get there. North (29-3) will send ace Alex Hermeling to the mound for the final against Maine South Monday at 10 a.m.
