Get Out: Guaranteed Fun, Inspirational Weekend

Let Patch help you plan what you're going to do.

Can't decide what you and the family will do this weekend? If you don't mind taking a chance on rain, get out and enjoy all the area has to offer. Patch has a few ideas:

Follow the Leader

What: : A Creatively Caring Special Event. A second-grader will take young and old alike through a presentation on the National Geographic Society, respect for wildlife and then help kids make a free craft to take home. Nature Center Rangers will also be on hand to answer questions.

Grab the Big One

What: Trout and Grouse is offering Fly Fishing 101.

The Basics: At 1 p.m., June 2 at Trout and Grouse, 840 Willow Rd., Northbrook. Free. Call the store 847-480-0111 for reservations; space is limited.

Why: Fly fishing is life.

Catch Some Tunes

What: Glenbrook North's bands and choirs will supply the sounds at a free concert Saturday afternoon at . Concessions will be sold with proceeds benefitting the Glenbrook North Band Parents.

The Basics: 12:30 p.m., June 2, at the Green, Shermer Road & Meadow Road, Northbrook.

Why: Good tunes, good to support and buy local.

Run for a Cause

What: The annual 5K Run/Walk to benefit research to combat Lou Gehrig's Disease, fund District 30 programs and scholarships for former Maple School students intending to become teachers.

Basics: 8 a.m., Saturday June 2 at , 2370 Shermer Rd., Northbrook. Entry fee is $30.

Why: It's a good thing to do.

Help Your Mother (Earth)

What: A daylong celebration of awareness and action will be featured this coming Saturday during the Chicago Botanic Garden's fifth celebration of World Environment Day. Activities and programs will be offered exploring how people of all ages can protect the Earth. Gardeners can recycle plastic plant containers and demonstrations on sustainable gardening will be provided.

The Basics: Hours at the Garden are from 8 a.m. to sunset, 1000 Lake Cook Rd., Glencoe.  Admission is $20 per car; $25 per van. Parking is free for members. For more information, check the website or call 847-835-5440.

Why: Mother needs all the help she can get.
