Get To Know Freshman A Baseball's No. 1 Fan

Blogger and baseball parent Dr. Warren Bruhl shares some sports photography tips, talks about his favorite local sports teams and gives a little background on his own sports experience.

This week, Patch posed five questions to Dr. Warren Bruhl, a local chiropractor, father of three and regular volunteer. In his spare time,  about 's varsity and freshman A baseball teams as well as the American Legion team, the Northbrook Braves.

Patch: What got you interested in blogging for Patch? Did you have any previous experience writing about sports?

Dr. Bruhl: I was looking for a vehicle to give some of the local teams in Northbrook more exposure for their strong efforts and success. I coached locally for many years in Northbrook and I had followed many of these young athletes for years.  Writing about them was a way of helping inspire them and hopefully some other young athletes in the community who may be looking up to them as role models.   I was also impressed with the consistent and valuable information conveyed in the Patch daily. I had provided some work on sports back in high school for a newspaper and for our yearbook.

Patch: Your photos are fantastic. What kind of camera do you use? Any tips for budding sports photographers?

Dr. Bruhl: I use a Nikon D7000 and 2 lenses for my photos.  The camera has a great focus action feature and multiple shot feature which allows me to capture great photos.  The two lenses I use are both Nikon lenses and feature stabilization features and autofocus mode.  Lighting is very important to action photography and I would recommend shooting photos when possible in bright light with the light behind the photographer so the light is on the subject.

Also, it is always a good idea to think ahead of the game and imagine what would happening next and prepare to shoot a photo on the location you are focused. As an example, if there is a runner in scoring position, the photographer wants to prepare his angle and lens for a possible play at the plate and then when it happens, shoot it!Also, good idea to try and catch the athletes in between in their relaxed human side.  These always make good photos and parents love them of young athletes.

Patch: What is your favorite Chicago sports team?

Dr. Bruhl: I love the Chicago Bulls and the Cubs and currently the GBN Freshman (A) team because my son plays for this team.  A dad has to have his priorities!!

Patch: Did you play sports yourself? If so, which ones?

Dr. Bruhl: Yes, I played high school baseball and football.  I also wrestled for a short time.  I became interested in bodybuilding out of high school and participated briefly in that sport as well.

Patch: Why did you choose to live in Northbrook? What makes this community great?

Dr. Bruhl: My wife and I chose Northbrook originally because it was near Glencoe where my practice was located and I loved the size of the town, not too big and not too small!  We also found the value of homes more affordable for young family 21 years ago and coupled with fantastic schools, it made the move an easy decision.  Oh, and it also helped that we found just the perfect home!
