PHOTOS: Serving Those With Disabilities, Local Businesses Are 'Everyday Heroes'

Whole Foods Market Evanston South, Forrest's Duxler Complete Auto Care, and North Suburban YMCA recognized for commitment to disability-aware service.

Three local businesses were recognized as "everyday heroes" Thursday night in Northbrook for their commitment to providing service to and employment of individuals with disabilities. 

JJ's List, a nonprofit whose mission is to broaden the economic and social futures of people with disabilities, recognized the honorees during a benefit event at .

Businesses recognized included , Forrest's , and . Appropriately, the evening's theme was "Celebrating Everyday Heroes".

"I grew up with a sister with a disability so it's definitely a cause close to my heart," said Bridget Isaia, marketing and community relations specialist at Whole Foods Market Evanston South. "I think it's so important to give people with disabilities the skills they need in the 21st century."

The two other honorees of the night were Howard Schultz, Executive Director/CEO of North Suburban YMCA, and Glenn Moak, owner of Forrest's Duxler Complete Auto Care. Both were also commended for their commitment to disability-aware service.

"It was fantastic to see so many supporters of JJ's List come out on a rainy night," said JJ Hanley, founder of JJ's List. Although final numbers had not yet come in, Hanley stated that she thought the group had raised roughly $20,000.

"That's wonderful for such a young organization, especially in these tough economic times," Hanley said. 

JJ's List offers online listings where anyone can review a local business' or organization's commitment to including individuals with disabilities.
