It's nice to see we have and extra 100 million lying around to use for a library. We can't fix theRead More budget or the pension because we don't have money. We are being told again that we have to raise taxes even after the temporary tax became permenant. We have 100,s of brand new Police cars being stored because we dont have the money to put the electrical equipment in them with more cars on the way. This to me is like buying a new car because you are homeless and have nowhere to live. At first I thought this was a Rauner advertisement, it will be .

Sadly if this is the kind of 'news' that is going to be put into the Patch I don't think I'llRead More subscribe anymore. :(

Perhaps this was all meant as a horribly misguided homage to Vincent van Gogh. In the days to come,Read More we may read of a lucky lady—or gent—receiving a parcel containing the rapper’s severed appendage and a note inscribed with the words: “Take it, it will be useful.”

I own a small business in Woodridge IL. The amount of credit card fraud has here has increased tenRead More fold over last year. I have to tell you that the card owner doesn't get burned, the card issuer don't either, nor does the company you hire to process and approve the cards. It's the local merchant where the card was used. Online ordering is the worst. The big banks say you didn't swipe a card, so you're liable, even though it was approved by that same bank at the time of purchase. If this keeps up, I'll have to go backwards in time and shut down online ordering. So much for a cashless society.

I think I will go back to using checks at stores and cash at gas stations. I found a gas station inRead More Eagle Rock that gives a discount for using cash and generally buy my gas there. Not as convenient as using a debit card but I had to cancel my card after using it at Target right before Christmas. What a hassle.

I fail to see what this guy's race or politicial affiliation has to do with what he did. He looksRead More white to me (so the "third-world" comment doesn't make sense), and the "Obozocare" comment is absolutely ridiculous. You can blame the video games, but this guy had an underlying reason for what he did. You have to have a lot of patience to deal with a baby. They cry. They screw up your life if you really haven't grown up. I was appalled that he is being charged with third-degree murder, but I don't think he meant to kill his son. He just wasn't mature enough to be a father.
tamarya April 19, 2014 at 11:33 am
Well pam that is where i was getting with my comment. Time people grow the hell up! There is noRead More reason a 24 yr old MAN should be too immature to raise a baby. Start teaching these young adults to be young adults, not 2 yr old babies. In high school is where it can start.

I didn't read anything in the story about the father. What does the dad getting lucky have to doRead More with the story? Is "somebody" a bitter ex?
Eric S April 19, 2014 at 10:51 am
Brian, the point of including the father is the family history of poor behaviors and the popularRead More opinion that money bought off the law rather than justice being served.

NO -----SHE DESERVES WHAT SHE GOT..- She STABBED STABBED STABBED..she should have gotten the deathRead More penalty.....but michigan has only life in prison. Don't have sympathy for her just because she's a woman. She's a cold blooded killer and deserves what she got.
RON Ostrodamus April 19, 2014 at 02:11 am
The death penalty certainly cuts down on the record number of incarcerations in America. Enough ofRead More this liberal crap on humane punishment. The word "humane' never enters the minds of these cold blooded killers. What is going to happen if another bombing takes place outside of Texas? What is going to happen with the next airplane hijacking, or Boston?

Don, the comments were made at sentencing, not at trialso it hss no bearing on her conviction.

The club is dated and, most importantly, the club is small for a town the size of Northbrook. TheRead More equipment is close together and you feel cramped. The location is not ideal for anyone – Techny is one lane in each direction, GBN traffic flow affects it in the morning – Waukegan has enough traffic to choke it already. I would also like to know whose fingers are in what pies – remember the Board voted yes in less than 20 minutes with little to no discussion. While I am sure that it would be nice to have a center like this in Northbrook, someone else’s design for a for profit club is not necessarily where I would begin if given the design task from scratch. This is a bad idea for many reasons and, while taxes may need to rise in Northbrook, this is a poor justification.

Good points re: traffic, although the Park Center is no better. I would like to know a priceRead More comparison with building from scratch.
Donald J. Brayer April 19, 2014 at 08:18 am
The Five Seasons proposal by the Park District needs a lot of airing. The only thing we know aboutRead More it at the moment is that it will cost taxpayers $25 million (for starters) and that Park District officials have been discussing it in secret with the Five Seasons owners for approximately two years. Amazingly, with this set of facts, the Board took an entire 20 minutes to decide to go ahead with the project and put it on the ballot for voters in November. Admittedly, government is not particularly well know for taking time to make intelligent decisions (unless there happens to be a rare beetle or turtle involved). However, most of us would discuss the acquisition of of a major piece of property with others who would be affected by the purchase. Consider the purchase of a home. An intelligent person would consult with his/her spouse and others whom the purchase would affect. She would ask whether the property is exactly what all parties involved actually wanted and whether it was comfortably affordable without recourse to several banks, bonds, grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, children's piggy banks, etc. In other words, all available information and opinions would be reviewed before making the purchase. If some of the necessary information was missing, we would enlist appraisers, home inspectors, and financial analysts to help make a well reasoned decision. In the matter of the Five Seasons, we have a few people in our community making the decision that "we want a recreation center because everyone else has one." Where are the facts? Who is likely to use this facility? A majority of NB residents (not a chance)? Are we being asked to approve this project based on reason or emotion? So far, all I see is emotion and "I want this because I want it." I have seen nothing even remotely explaining how the current owners of the Five Seasons will be affected. The Park District, to my knowledge, has only thrown numbers into the air with no explanation of the basis for those figures and why they make sense for the entire Northbrook community. Could it be that there is no economic justification for five Seasons purchase and it is only a fantasy in the minds of a few? We deserve more from our elected officials. For starters, I would like to see the financials of the current Five Seasons operation for the past 7 years including the extent of membership. I would also like to see pro forma financials including the cost of purchase, repairs, operating expenses and sources of funds for the next five years. Then we can have a reasonable discussion. At the moment, we are being asked to sky dive without a parachute. Sometimes that works - but not so much.

No where in the article does he said he knew it.
