BOYS BASKETBALL: McAuliffe's Return Heightens Spartans' Aspirations

Glenbrook North junior Andrew McAuliffe is back in action with the boys basketball team after missing eight weeks.

Glenbrook North’s postseason hopes got a big boost when six-foot-eight Andrew McAuliffe returned from a fractured right patella a week ago at Highland Park. The junior forward is still returning to form after missing eight weeks, but his inside presence alone has the Spartans in position for a deep run in the playoffs. The team has already clinched at least a share of the Central Suburban League North title for the 11th straight year, and was recently given the No. 2 seed in the Glenbrook South Sectional with the postseason beginning in late February. The team is hoping to draw on McAuliffe for success in postseason play, but he’s been inconsistent on court so far. He scored double figures just once in his first four games back, a double-…

BOYS BASKETBALL: Spartans Trounce Vikings in 'Layup Drill'

Mark Johnson and Andrew McAuliffe combined for 57 points to pace Glenbrook North in a 67-39 blow out in Niles North's home opener.

After the Glenbrook North finished demolishing Niles North in its home opener, Vikings coach Glenn Olson said the game was a layup drill for the Spartans. The Spartans got to the basket seemingly at will in an impressive, and surprising, 67-39 win over the Vikings Tuesday night in Skokie. The two teams split the Central Suburban League North title and the Vikings beat the Spartans in a regional final last season. Mark Johnson (28 points, 5 rebounds) and Andrew McAuliffe (29 points, 6 rebounds) used size and quickness to get a number of easy layups. The 6-foot-8-inch McAuliffe utilized a big height advantage inside while Johnson scored his points from numerous backdoor cuts to the basket. Related: Patch's Basketball Rankings - Week 2 “We …

Spartans' Season Ends as Rival Vikings Claim Regional Title

Behind 36 points from senior Abdel Nader, Niles North ended GBN's season 69-65 in Friday's Class 4A Regional Championship in Northbrook.

With a 69-65 win in the schools' decisive third meeting this year, the fourth-seeded Niles North Vikings (22-6) not only claimed the IHSA Class 4A Northbrook Regional Championship on Friday night, they also ended No. 5 Glenbrook North's season in the process. "This is probably our kids' first experience even seeing this happen," Vikings' head coach Glenn Olson said as his team cut down the nets on GBN's home court. "We're excited - I'm very excited for them;" Niles North advances to play No. 1 seed Notre Dame in Tuesday's New Trier Sectional Semifinal. Vikings senior and All-Area selection Abdel Nader, who dropped 49 points in a Dec. 7 loss (in Northbrook), scored a game-high 36 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and two…

No. 5 seed Glenbrook North downed No. 12 Mather 77-44 on Tuesday night, setting up a blockbuster IHSA Class 4A Regional Final against conference-rival Niles North on Friday in Northbrook.

For the first time in as long as head coach Dave Weber can remember, the Glenbrook North Spartans enjoyed an entire week of practice without any injuries or illnesses. The much-needed preparation paid dividends on Tuesday night in Northbrook as the Spartans eased past No. 12 seed Mather, 77-44 in the IHSA Class 4A regional semifinals. Sophomore Andrew McAuliffe lead four players in double figures with 16 points, while fellow 6-foot-7 forwards Tommy Fernitz and Peter Szostak added 14 and 10 points respectively. Senior guard Tommy Hanrahan finished with 11. "Tonight was probably our best effort of the year because our guys were more focused. Our guard play was good, our bigs finished inside and I think we played with a lot of intensity," …

The winter sports are winding down, but a few GBN squads are still marching on.

HOCKEY - Glenbrook North lost a heartbreaker in the Scholastic Cup semifinal, 2-1 to Barrington on Wednesday. The Spartans took a lead into the third period thanks to a power play goal from Seth Gideon, but they gave up two late goals including one on a penalty shot. They picked up a 4-0 win over Sandburg with goals coming from Gideon, Garrison Sanipass, Jonathan Gauger and Jared Fisher. Spartan Roundup Feb. 21

This week, the boys basketball team won another conference title and Andrew Maksimovic competed at state wrestling.

BOYS BASKETBALL - Glenbrook North earned a share of its tenth straight conference title by destroying Maine East 73-39. Niles North also won, meaning the Spartans will not be participating in the Central Suburban League title game because they have been to the title game more recently than the Vikings. With a 65-50 win over Hersey earlier in the week, GBN won consecutive games for the first time in over a month. Andrew McAuliffe got back to his early season form by scoring 28 points. The Spartans (18-7, 8-2) close out the regular season at Niles West on Tuesday. GIRLS BASKETBALL - The girls dominated Schurz 50-11 in regional quarterfinal action at Resurrection on Tuesday. Spartan Roundup Feb. 14

In Glenbrook North athletics, wrestler Andrew Maksimovic earns a trip to state and girls basketball team closes out regular season.

BOYS BASKETBALL - As if inconsistent play on the court wasn't frustrating enough, Glenbrook North is now dealing with injuries and the flu. After winning 54-45 at Maine West on Friday, Glenbrook North lost at Conant in overtime on Saturday. The win over Maine West keeps the Spartans tied for first in the Central Suburban League North at 7-2, but they were shorthanded in the 48-45 loss to the Cougars. Tommy Hanrahan and Ethan Schmidt didn't play while Andrew McAuliffe, who scored 18 points at Conant, Peter Szostak and Jordan Liss are playing at less than full health. The Spartans (16-7) have a couple weeks before the playoffs to recover. On the topic of playoffs, the seedings were announced this week. GBN earned the five seed in the New …

Undermanned Spartans Fall in Overtime

Glenbrook North overcame illness and injury to force overtime against Conant Saturday night but fell to the Cougars 48-45 in Hoffman Estates.

Despite battling injuries and the flu throughout last week, the Glenbrook North Spartans stayed competitive on the road Saturday night but eventually fell to the Conant Cougars, 48-45, in overtime in Hoffman Estates. Spartans starting shooting guard Tommy Hanrahan missed his second straight game due to illness and three other Spartans, including backup point guard Ethan Schmidt, didn't even make the trip. Sophomore Andrew McAuliffe, who also missed practice time during the week (sprained left wrist), led the Spartans with 18 points, five rebounds and four blocks. "I thought we fought and we had a chance to win and that's what we wanted to have in this game," said Spartans head coach Dave Weber. "They're a good team, and we're a good team …

Boys Basketball: Spartans Bested by Blue Devils in Northbrook

Glenbrook North's boys' basketball team has now lost four of its last five contests following a 54-49 non-conference home loss to the Warren Blue Devils Saturday night.

Despite being tied at halftime, the visiting Warren Blue Devils used a 10-3 third-quarter run to take control and eventually hand GBN its second home loss of the season, 54-49, in an overly physical non-conference match-up Saturday night in Northbrook. Things got chippy right from the start as players from both sides were seemingly thrown to the hardwood on every early possession. However, Spartans head coach David Weber was called for the game's first technical foul for arguing at the 2:31 mark of the opening period, igniting a 7-0 Warren run to close the quarter. "I've been trying to get technicals for the past two weeks to try and fire these guys up but no one will give it to me," said Weber. "Tonight was the weakest one but I thought …
