Harlem Tops Spartans in Wild Playoff Game

GBN football fell to Harlem 31-21 in the first round of Class 7A playoffs.

Big plays and turnovers often decide tight football games, but when both teams have their share of each it makes for a very exciting game. Both Glenbrook North and visiting Harlem had big gainers and crucial mistakes in a Class 7A first round playoff game Friday night. But when the dust settled, the Huskies from Machesney Park pulled out a 31-21 win. Harlem quarterback Brandon Rogers led a potent running attack against the Spartans (8-2) and got his offense rolling from the start. The Huskies (8-2) marched to the GBN five-yard line in just four plays, but on second and goal fumbled the ball. Brian Chung recovered. However, the Spartans went three and out and a high snap on the punt sent the ball sailing through the end zone for a safety. …

GBN Football Finishes Perfect Conference Season

The Spartans defeated Deerfield 26-20 to finish 5-0 in the CSL North.

An outright conference title, an undefeated conference season and a home playoff game. That's what was on the line for the Glenbrook North football team when they played Deerfield Friday night in Northbrook. The Spartans came through with a 26-20 win over the Warriors to lock up the Central Suburban League North for the first time since 2007. The win also means GBN (8-1, 5-0) is very likely to host the first round of the playoffs, with the draw to be determined Saturday night. It wasn't easy though. Deerfield (5-4, 3-2) scored a touchdown on a one-yard run from Jeremy Kritt on the first drive of the game. "Deerfield came out a lot harder than we thought they would, but we got the job done," North running back Nick Freund said. With a win, …

Spartans Take Control of CSL North in Homecoming Game

GBN beat two-time defending conference champion Highland Park 35-14 on Friday night.

Fireworks followed Glenbrook North's homecoming game against Highland Park, but the team produced plenty of fireworks of its own during the game. GBN knocked off the reigning conference champion Giants with an emphatic 35-14 win in the Central Suburban League North. The Spartans (6-1, 3-0) clinched a playoff berth with the win and took over the driver's seat in the conference standings. "As we said last week, they're the two time defending champs so until someone knocks them off…" GBN coach Bob Pieper said. "Obviously we got two more games and nothing has been decided, but that's a big step for us. We're trying to get better every week and I think we did that." After the Giants (3-4, 2-1) went three-and-out on the opening drive, the …

Batang's Big Game Sparks Spartan Win

Senior receiver Armin Batang had more than 160 total yards in GBN's 34-8 win over Niles North.

Glenbrook North went a little deeper in its playbook against Niles North and senior Armin Batang was the beneficiary. Batang had the first score of the game on a halfback pass from sophomore Grant Rushing in the Spartans' 34-8 win over the Vikings in the Central Suburban League North opener for both teams. "I'm proud of the way that we played," GBN coach Bob Pieper said. "We talked all week about trying to be as physical as we can. We played 48 minutes hard, so on both sides of the ball I thought we played well." The game was scoreless after the first quarter, but that didn't last for long. Early in the second quarter, senior quarterback Zack Hilgendorf (11 of 13 passes for 184 yards) threw what looked like a screen pass to Rushing, who …
