Glenbrook North and friends of the Garrity family are working together to honor the young men who passed away this summer.
An online fundraising website has already collected more than $5000 for the William "Billy" Garrity Scholarship Fund, just two weeks after friends of the Garrity family came up with the idea and launched the site. “We were trying to think of ways to help out with the Garrity family and all that’s happened in the last couple weeks in Northbrook, so I created this page to raise money for the scholarship fund that they’re starting up at Glenbrook North," said Daniel Malter, 21, a Glenbrook North alumnus and friend of the Garrity family who created the online fundraiser. “We didn’t want to do something too extreme so that the family might feel uncomfortable, so we thought this would be the perfect way to help them.” William "Billy" Garrity, a…

There were no outbursts, no shocking revelations about the recent tragedies in Glenview and Northbrook. On Wednesday night, hundreds of people filled Glenbrook North's Sheely Center to quietly reflect on the past and hear expert advice on grief management, the statistical realities of suicides in Illinois and how to communicate with loved ones during periods of emotional hardship. In the aftermath of last week's train derailment and the string of young people who passed away last month, Glenbrook North will hold a presentation and discussion to help community members deal with grief. The event, called Tools for Coping, is scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. in GBN's Sheely Center. It will feature expert presentations, and cover topics such as: Following the presentation, participants will have the opportunity to break-out in smaller discussion groups or meet with counseling professionals. Two young men and their families were remembered last night during a public gathering at the Village Presbyterian Church.
On the heels of Billy Garrity's death earlier this month, Northbrook is greiving over the death of another young person, Ryan McCarthy, a Glenbrook North alumni, who committed suicide at his home on Wednesday. He was 20. The Village Presbyterian Church has scheduled a public gathering tonight at 7:30 p.m. for people to pay respects to both men and their families. "Anyone who would like to come is more than welcome to come and talk and pray and be together," said Mike Nevling, senior pastor at Village Presbyterian.
