Shermer-Willow Businesses See 50 Percent Drop Since Derailment

Union Pacific is handling loss of business claims for local shops, including nearby Mario's Pizza and Beef, whose owner is still concerned about sustaining his business.

Businesses near the Shermer and Willow intersection keep struggling while Shermer Rd. remains blocked by the temporary stone bridge Union Pacific built to move freight until a new viaduct is built. There is still no confirmed design to replace the one that fell in July, crushing two Glenview residents driving underneath.  "I've seen books that [nearby businesses] are 40 to 50 percent off the usual business they have this time of year," said Don Owen, Glenview's Deputy Village Manager. "If that lasts over time, you can't sustain a business." Glenview-Northbrook Bridge Collapse Slows Surrounding Business

Foot traffic has decreased in the area since the fatal crash, which killed a Glenview couple last week.

Wil-Sher Shopping Plaza business owners say they've seen less customers since the July 4 train wreck that caused a bridge to collapse near the Northbrook-Glenview border, the Sun-Times reports. “My customers from Glenview are not coming here," Young Shin, a Glenview resident and owner of Willow Cleaners told the newspaper. "Making our lease payment will not be easy." Union Pacific Railroad spokesman Mark Davis said a new bridge will be ready in two months, retailers doubt a quick re-opening of Shermer Road.  "This is going to be crazy," Angel Hernandez, a cook at Mario's Pizza told Patch. "When they fixed the bridge it was a nightmare, we had no business, last year." The same bridge had been closed last year "for 3 ½ months while Union …

I feel bad for the shops on Shermer just south of Willow. I don't work at the Subway but have gotten to know the owner and staff a bit. They are fantastic at what they do and I feel fortunate to have them part of our community. I know the dry cleaners also. They do great cleaning and alterations. We should all try to stop in and help them make it through this rough time.   more ›

Village Board to Review Draft Downtown Plan

Trustees will likely consider issues of eminent domain and tax increment financing at tonight's meeting.

Issues of eminent domain and tax increment financing (TIF) are likely to be the subject of discussion Tuesday, when the village board meets to review a draft plan for downtown development. Presented by a team of consultants, the plan includes such proposals as a revitalized Meadow Plaza, a parking garage at the Metra lot and a river walk winding between Meadow and Shermer roads. How those proposals would be implemented—and financed—has yet to be determined. Members of a downtown development steering committee established to oversee the process recently concluded their study and sent the plan to the village board for approval. Among other suggestions, the steering committee recommended that the village should consider establishing a TIF …

Very good point, Jennifer. Most residents probably don't realize that every board meeting and even committee meetings are open to the public. There are very few residents that attend these meetings, however. That is why we rely on the capable journalism skills of people like you!!!   more ›

Now We Know: The Hair Salons You Trust

Patch asked; you responded. Here's what you had to say about local hair salons.

Last week, we asked you to tell us who you trust when it comes to local hair salons in Northbrook. Readers sounded off in our directory of local businesses, posted reviews on Facebook and let us know in the comments. Here's what you had to say: "Nice people work here under the leadership of 'the boss,'" Tom Klein wrote of Philip Anthony Salon. "I highly recommend this place. I will wait weeks if I have to see the talented Oscar--and for ladies, nothing better but the best, Debbie."   Laurie Schnittmann, a regular at L'Oran Salon, gushed over her hair cutters. Texting 911? Northbrook Biz Makes it Possible

Local company's clients include ComEd, city of Chicago and the Canadian government.

If you’ve ever sent a text to ComEd to report an electrical outage, or messaged the City of Chicago to find out, say, where your car was towed, you’ve used something designed by Jay Malin.  The 42-year-old Northbrook resident is co-founder and managing director of AGENT511, a company that creates mobile messaging systems for municipalities, hospitals and other public service agencies around the country and even in Canada. Locally, AGENT511 is the force behind the City of Chicago’s text-message version of 311, called “ChiTEXT,” as well as an outage alert system for ComEd. “There are more cell phones in the U.S. than there are people,” says Malin, who grew up in Glenview. “It is almost literally a one-to-one ratio.” Malin co-founded the …
