PHOTOS: The Carnival Comes To Town

Families fill the Village Green for the first night of Northbrook Days, the annual summer celebration.

Children shriek from 25 feet in the air, the engines of carnival rides groan and a band warms up on the Village Green. Northbrook Days is here. The village's biggest festival of the year opened Wednesday night, featuring rides, games, live music, and food from local restaurants. Open through Sunday, the celebration is put on by the all-volunteer Northbrook Civic Foundation. "The first day is going phenomenally well," said member Mike Morgan. "The sun is shining; the park is full." Proceeds from the event benefit local nonprofits and community organizations, including the Northfield Township Food Pantry, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Northbrook Fire Department. VIDEO: Winter Carnival Offers Bonfire, Dog Sledding and Chili

Northbrook residents spent the day enjoying the outdoors on Village Green.

Snowboarders showed off their tricks, dogs demonstrated their sled-pulling skills, and families enjoyed games and food during the Northbrook Park District's Winter Carnival this weekend.  The event on the Village Green also featured a chili cook-off judged by Park District Commissioners Paul Zima and Jeff Simon, along with volunteer Paige Paulson Sue Schmittroth was declared first place winner for her entry, titled "Internal Inferno." Despite the cold, families stayed warm with a raging bonfire complete with free s'mores—not to mention the chili.

The winter carnival was wonderful and very well organized. My family traveled from Lombard to see the dog sledding show, but loved the entire event. The snowboarders, food, chili contest, it was great. My in-laws also thought the seating in the warming house was good, and had plenty of room.   more ›
