Spartan Girls Track: Young Team Gains Experience at Sectionals

Some junior varsity runners were pulled up to gain experience and let other athletes focus on one event.

The combination of injuries and tough competition doesn’t often bode well for any team. Combine that with the fact that Glenbrook North is relatively young and inexperienced and success wasn’t defined by place for the Spartans. Competing in one of the state’s toughest sectional meets, Glenbrook North failed to qualify any of its athletes for the state finals next weekend in Charleston--but did score some good performances along the way. “We got close to qualifying a few people. The whole team did a nice job today,” Glenbrook North coach Ron Gatchalian said. “Our high jumper placed third, so she got close there. It was a pretty tight race in the high jump.” Sophomore high jumper Patricia Hare was one of a number of Spartans to come close to…

Spartans Roundup Jan. 24

Wrestling conference results, Blackhawk Cup bracket.

BOYS BASKETBALL - Glenbrook North fell from the roster of unbeaten Central Suburban League North teams Friday night. Niles North beat the Spartans for the first time since 1998, 48-44. The Spartans led by nine at halftime, but Niles North made a 9-0 run to start the half and gained momentum. Peter Szostak had a team-high 10 points. At 5-1 in conference, GBN (15-3) still holds a one-game lead over Niles North. They have to wait a week to get back in the win column; Deerfield comes to Northbrook on Friday. GIRLS BASKETBALL - It was a tough week for the GBN girls. The team lost to Niles North 61-34 on Friday and followed with a 56-50 loss to Regina on Saturday. Sammie Von Reuder had 10 points to lead the Spartans on Friday. GBN (5-18, 2-5) …

Top 10 Spartan Moments of 2010

Taking a look back at the best 10 (OK, 11) accomplishments of the year for Glenbrook North athletics.

10. Boys Volleyball: Spartans go undefeated in conference play in all levels The GBN boys' volleyball team has had its fair share of success in the Central Suburban League (CSL) North over the years, but to go 10-0 at all four levels of play is an impressive feat. The varsity squad also took a regional title and advanced to the sectional final before losing to Maine South, who went undefeated in the regular season. 9. Baseball: Alex Hermeling's one-hitter against Niles West Hermeling took a no-hitter into the sixth against the Wolves before surrendering a hit with two outs. The Spartans won 8-1, the lone run against Hermeling was unearned, and Hermeling pitched a complete game. Hermeling recently signed to play for The University of …

Spartans Girls Run Their Way to State Finals

The Glenbrook North girls cross country team finished fourth at the IHSA sectionals meet Saturday morning at Busse Reservoir.

Glenbrook North's girls cross-country team made history on Saturday. Working together, the Spartan's top five runners all finished the IHSA sectional meet within 50 seconds of one another, placing fourth as a team and becoming the first girls cross-country squad in school history to secure a spot in state finals. Along with sectional first-place winner Palatine, second place Prospect and third place Schaumburg, Glenbrook North is one of five high schools from the sectional meet at Busse Reservoir that will go on to compete at state. "The whole entire race was exciting. You could feel everyone was cheering," said the Spartans' star freshman, Ellery Marrinan, who hit the front early and held a top 10 position until the last mile. "But it was…

GBN Girls Run Past New Trier For CSL Cross-Country Title

It came down to their No. 6 runner, but Glenbrook North was declared the team champion in the girls varsity race at the CSL conference meet Saturday.

Scoring in cross-country is very exact, and can be very exciting. But nothing compares with the way the girls varsity race was determined at the Central Suburban League conference meet Saturday at Niles West. Glenbrook North's Cassie Bobart, the sixth GBN runner to cross the line and 21st overall, ended up being the deciding factor in the race. Because both the Spartans and the New Trier Trevians had the same score from their top five runners (which is how most cross-country races are determined) the title was settled by comparing the places of the  No. 6 runner on each team, and Bobart finished ahead of New Trier's Ellie Pearlman by 27 seconds and six overall places. All 12 Central Suburban League teams ran together in each age group, but…
