Glenbrook North's boys team should do big things while the girls will try to rebound from a disappointing season last year.
Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s basketball teams. We’re putting a new twist on our basketball rankings this season. Instead of ranking the boys and girls teams separately, Patch will be putting out an overall “School Basketball Ranking” that takes into consideration the results and news from both teams. With more games each week, there is the chance for greater movement up and down the rankings. We start the season with New Trier on top as both Trevian teams should be conference title contenders. PATCH PRESEASON RANKINGS 1. New Trier – The Trevians start as the preseason favorite and brings back load of talent from last year’s teams. Connor Boehm and Austin Angel will lead the boys while Northwestern recruit …

Last season showcased a lot of solid teams in the North Shore; expect 2011-2012 to be more of the same.
With only Loyola Academy surviving past the second round of the IHSA football playoffs, our attention turns towards the hard wood. The first games for high school girls basketball teams start on Nov. 14 while the boys get going a week later on Nov. 21, so there’s no better time to quickly recap all the action from an exciting 2010-2011 season in the North Shore and preview the upcoming year in hoops. Our preseason power rankings will debut next week with a unique format. We will be combining the results and scores from both the boys and girls teams to provide a “school basketball ranking.” 2010-11 SEASON RECAP Parody defined the year on both the boys and girls sides. While a couple teams ultimately made deep runs in the postseason, …

GBN had a chance to share the CSL North, but lost 2-0 at Deerfield.
For over an hour Monday night, Glenbrook North and Deerfield were goalless and neither looked like scoring. Then, suddenly, the host Warriors pounded a pair of shots from outside the box into the net and picked up the 2-0 Central Suburban League North win. A Spartans’ win would have given them a share of the CSL North. Instead GBN (19-4-2, 3-1-1) has just one win in its last four matches and will have to regain its confidence before next week’s regional. On the opposite end, Deerfield (12-8-2, 4-1) has won five matches in a row, all shutouts, and moved up to second place in the conference. “We’ve been talking about this game for so long,” Warriors’ sophomore Samara Haas said. “First it was Highland Park and then it was just to come out …

Alex Hermeling struck out 11 in a 2-1 Glenbrook North win over New Trier in eight innings to improve to 18-1 on the season.
Led by starting pitcher Alex Hermeling, Glenbrook North baseball just keeps cranking out wins. Saturday's game was no exception, when the Spartans found a way to beat New Trier 2-1 in eight innings at Duke Child’s Fields in Winnetka. It was GBN’s second straight extra inning victory and improved their record to 18-1 and 7-0 in the Central Suburban League. Starting pitcher Alex Hermeling was on top of his game, striking out 11 without walking a batter. “I thought he pitched the best game the entire year,” said catcher Jason Scholl. “He’s an unbelievable pitcher and his command today was better than I’ve ever seen. I mean, he was hitting spots like no other. “All day was Alex was just unbelievable. I couldn’t say more good things about him…

The Spartans trailed big early and lost 14-9 to Lyons Township.
The last time Glenbrook North faced a top in-state opponent, New Trier, the Spartans simply couldn’t match up. This time, against Lyons Township, it was execution that cost GBN a chance to win. The Spartans lost 14-9 to the Lions, the second ranked team in the state according to Laxpower.com, at the slick Techny Fields on Tuesday. Lyons took advantage of a number of turnovers early for a 7-1 lead in the second quarter. The Spartans fought hard, but dug themselves into too deep of a hole to come back. “I think the problem early on in the game was we come off too soft,” Kyle Fernitz said. “We come off slow and we expect a lot of our bigger middies, the people who score a lot. We expect them to do more. You can’t do that in lacrosse. It’s a …

Timely hitting along with Alex Hermeling's 13 strikeouts pushed Glenbrook North past Deerfield 3-2 on Thursday afternoon in Northbrook.
Glenbrook North starter Alex Hermeling wasn't on top of his game, yet the Louisiana-Monroe bound right-hander struck out 13 batters as the Spartans remained unbeaten against in-state opponents, defeating rival Deerfield 3-2 in Northbrook on Thursday in the CSL North opener for both schools. "I thought Alex did a great job of competing today," said GBN head coach Dominic Savino. "He probably didn't have his best stuff, relative to what we've seen earlier in the year, but the thing that I absolutely loved was how hard he went out there and competed. He gave us six real strong innings." Hermeling, who has struck out 25 batters in his last 13 innings, allowed two runs on just three hits with one walk before junior Peter Resnick fanned a pair …

Six Spartans combined for 26 kills and Glenbrook North's boys' volleyball team upset area-ranked New Trier in straight sets (25-20, 25-16) on Friday night in Northbrook.
Glenbrook North's boys' volleyball team has yet to crack any top-ten poll. But after Friday's dismantling of area-ranked New Trier, perhaps the Spartans will finally be given the respect their play demands. Behind a balanced offense and near-flawless defense, Glenbrook North (10-3) made quick work of the visiting Trevians, snapping New Trier's seven-match winning streak in consecutive sets (25-20, 25-16) in Northbrook. "We started spreading the ball around to every one of our guys, and we played really good defense," said Spartans' head coach Chris Cooper. "If you can play good defense and pass well, you can stay in any match, and when we do that, we're pretty good. Rankings this early in the season don't always tell the story." Though …

Glenbrook North's boys' volleyball team closed the decisive third-game on a 7-1 rally to earn a 25-22, 24-26, 25-22 win over rival Glenbrook South on Friday night in Glenview.
After trailing by six and four points in the first and third game respectively, Glenbrook North's defense sparked a pair of rallies, leading the Spartans (8-3) past rival Glenbrook South (25-22, 24-26, 25-22) on Friday night at the Titan Dome in Glenview. Junior Luke Jacobson led GBN with 10 kills, none of which were bigger than the back-to-back points that tied the third game at 21-21 and then gave the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish. "Luke really stepped up for us tonight - this is the first time we've had a middle-hitter lead us in kills this year," said GBN head coach, Chris Cooper. "What we tried to realize was that even though they're big, if we hit smart and get it past their block, they're going to struggle." Despite the …

The Spartans remained at #2 in the power rankings after their win against Maine West.
Sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s best basketball teams. While power rankings take season record into consideration, more recent results and news, including known injuries, have a bigger influence than early-season victories or losses. And they are completely and utterly subjective. Last week’s ranking is shown in parentheses. 1. Niles North (1) – The Vikings struggled against Maine East in the first half on Senior Night, but showed their improved defense can carry the team when shots aren’t falling. Their matchup against Deerfield could give them their first CSL North championship in more than a decade. Expect them to get it. 2. Glenbrook North (2) – Minus a couple key contributors, the Spartans still managed to eke …
