Glenbrook North dominated Maine East in a 55-22 win on homecoming.
It wasn’t exactly the ending Glenbrook North imagined, but the Spartans got to end the season on a win--and a resounding win no less. GBN thumped Maine East 55-22 during the season finale homecoming game in Northbrook Friday night, marking the end to a disappointing 4-5 season marred with injuries. The win over the Blue Demons (1-8, 1-4) gave the Spartans (4-5, 3-2) a winning record in the Central Suburban League North. The season started with playoff expectations, but as a consolation the seniors took advantage of the rare chance to end their careers with wins. The Spartans overcome the rainy conditions to shot a 302 in achieving goal of conference champs.
Glenbrook North (GBN) finished fourth in state last year, but it became a distant memory as the team focused on its main goal of the new golf season: winning the conference title. The Spartans stood out among the field at the Central Suburban League North meet Monday at Glencoe Golf Club to take the conference crown. Thanks to a 5-0 dual record in the regular season, GBN won the title outright. In gusty and rainy conditions, the Spartans totaled a 302 to beat Highland Park by 10 strokes. Deerfield took third with a 329. Spartan junior Nick Jan was the medalist with an even par 72. Coach Justin Gerbich said the his Glenbrook North golfers did well to play through the hard rain in the first five or six holes. He had high praise for both his …

After winning conference last fall, the Spartans have higher expectations this season.
By almost any definition, Glenbrook North’s (GBN) football team had a successful season last year, but it didn’t end the way the players wanted. Despite an 8-1 record and a Central Suburban League North title, the 31-21 first-round playoff loss to Harlem left a bitter taste for the Spartans. “Our goal set from the beginning of last year was to go farther in the playoffs,” said senior Jason Scholl. “We had an unbelievable regular season and obviously fell short in that first game of the playoffs.” Star junior running back Grant Rushing is back for his third year on varsity along with all-conference offensive lineman Mike Ermel and Scholl, last year’s leading tackler, all of whom give good reason for optimism in Spartans’ camp. The Spartans remained at #2 in the power rankings after their win against Maine West.
Sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s best basketball teams. While power rankings take season record into consideration, more recent results and news, including known injuries, have a bigger influence than early-season victories or losses. And they are completely and utterly subjective. Last week’s ranking is shown in parentheses. 1. Niles North (1) – The Vikings struggled against Maine East in the first half on Senior Night, but showed their improved defense can carry the team when shots aren’t falling. Their matchup against Deerfield could give them their first CSL North championship in more than a decade. Expect them to get it. 2. Glenbrook North (2) – Minus a couple key contributors, the Spartans still managed to eke …

Glenbrook North moves up a spot in Patch's power rankings after two tough games last week.
Sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s best basketball teams. While power rankings take season record into consideration, more recent results and news, including known injuries, have a bigger influence than early-season victories or losses. Last week’s ranking is shown in parentheses. 1. Niles North (1) – A difficult loss on the road to Hersey doesn’t drop the Vikings from the top of our rankings. They came back and beat a tough Maine West team that defeated them earlier in the season. Their only game this week against Maine East shouldn’t be a contest. 2. Glenbrook North (3) – A really nice home win against Highland Park gets the Spartans back on track after three straight losses. Playing a ranked Warren team down to the …

Playoffs are starting in the winter sports. See how GBN's teams are doing.
BOYS BASKETBALL - The inconsistent play of the Spartans continued last week. GBN snapped a three-game losing streak on Friday with a 53-35 win over Highland Park. Tommy Hanrahan made five three-pointers to score 17 points and Peter Szostak scored seven points in the first quarter to help the Spartans jump out to a 22-5 lead. Then, on Saturday Warren came to Northbrook and showed why they are a highly ranked team in the area. The Blue Devils won 54-49 to hand GBN its second home loss of the season. With only two weeks left in the regular season, the conference race remains tight. GBN (15-6) and Niles North both sit at 6-2 in the Centraul Suburban League North. The Spartans have a pair of road games coming up, at Maine West Friday and at …

A poor shooting second half doomed the Spartans in a 56-49 loss to the Warriors.
Two weeks in a row Glenbrook North has surrendered a big run to start the second half and as a result the Spartans have consecutive losses for the first time this season. Deerfield won 56-49 Friday night in Northbrook after trailing by five at halftime. Mack Watts led the Warriors with 17 points, but didn’t score in the fourth quarter. John Carney and Sam Sternberg picked up the slack, scoring all of Deerfield’s 12 points in the quarter to seal the win. Carney scored 16 and Sternberg added 14. “That was fun,” Deerfield coach Bret Just said. “It’s not often you come into this place and walk out feeling happy. I can not talk enough about the resiliency and character of these guys.” The Spartans started the game hot from the field and it …

Niles North got revenge for its close loss in Northbrook by beating Glenbrook North 48-44.
Last time Niles North and Glenbrook met on the court, the game was one to remember. Friday night's game didn’t come down to a buzzer beater, but it still included an exciting conclusion. The Vikings came back from down nine at halftime to pick up a statement win, 48-44, against the visiting Spartans. The win keeps Niles North (13-5, 4-2) alive in the Central Suburban League North title race, putting them a game behind the Spartans (14-3, 5-1). It’s also the first time the Vikings have defeated GBN in boys basketball since 1998. Considering these conference foes play twice a year, that’s quite the streak. With all that in mind, it’s more impressive that Niles North won despite leading scorer Abdel Nader having foul trouble and shooting just…

Despite season-high score, Spartans lose 135.800-124.35.
Little by little the Glenbrook North girls gymnastics team is improving. In a 135.800-124.35 loss to Niles North on senior night Thursday, the Spartans continued the trend of improving by one point every dual meet. “We had one girl out, Jane Nellis, and we still went up a point,” GBN coach Julie Holmbeck said. “We went from 123 to 124. It seems like we’ve been doing that every dual meet.” The young Spartans knew going in that they wouldn’t be contending for their fifth straight conference title, but the continued improvement means another season-high score. Sophomore Miriam Mikhelson led the way with a 32.00 all-around score including an 8.95 on the floor. Sophomore Valerie Bobart scored a 30.90 all-around with a team-best 8.25 on the …
