Residents Vote on Proposed Dog Park Designs

Northbrook Park District officials presented residents with tentative designs and possible amenities for the proposed dog park at Coast Guard Park.

More than 70 people attended the Northbrook Park District's presentation Wednesday night on possible designs for a proposed dog park at Coast Guard Park. No final decisions were made during the first public input meeting, but residents cast votes for possible park designs and possible amenities that could be installed once the new park is complete next year.  Four park concepts were introduced, all of which featured parking for 50 to 60 cars accessed from the driveway leading to Underwriters Laboratories, designated areas for small and big dogs, water fountains and bags for animal waste. Also, the Blue Star veteran memorial would remain at the park. Community members can still vote for park designs and propose suggestions to the park …

Public Input Meeting for Proposed Dog Park

The public is invited to review design concepts at the Northbrook Sports Center on Wednesday at 7pm for a dog park the park district has proposed at Coast Guard Park.

The following release was provided by the Northbrook Park District.  The Northbrook Park District is planning to build a dog park and will hold a Public Input Meeting on August 15 at 7pm at the Northbrook Sports Center Community Room to review design concepts. The proposed site is Coast Guard Park, 2490 Dundee Road, just west of the Northbrook Post Office. District residents will have the opportunity to discuss park features at the meeting. According to the 2009 Community Interest and Opinion Survey, almost one-third of Northbrook residents want a dog park, where people and their pets can socialize and dogs can play off-leash in a safe, containedarea. During Master Plan meetings in the spring of 2011, residents also suggested a dog park as…

Park District Promises Dog Park, Hopefully In 2012

While residents discuss a new community center, park district officials say a dog park is already in the works.

As the Northbrook Park District conducts public forums to gauge interest in a new community center, executive director Rick Hanetho has promised Northbrook residents that a dog park is already on the way. “We are very well aware of the fact that there is a strong contingent in our community that—excuse the pun—is ‘licking their chops’ for a dog park in Norhbrook,” Hanetho told a group of residents at a forum last week. “I can tell you that the park district is absolutely, 100 percent committed to building a dog park in Northbrook.”  Hanetho said that the park district hoped to move into design and construction of a dog park within the year, and is currently working to finalize the site. While some residents at the forum suggested putting a…

Where Would You Put A Dog Park in Northbrook?

Patch wants to know what you think.

When we published a story about a recent spike in complaints over dogs running off leash, we got lots of feedback from readers. Discussion ranged from coyotes to picking up pet waste to how dogs should be trained. But one theme was clear: many commenters believe that Northbrook needs a dog park, where pet owners could let their dogs run around safely (and legally) off leash. "We really do need to somehow create a fenced area for dogs and their owners where the dogs can be exercised and can socialize," wrote Colleen Holohan. "I know I can speak for hundreds of dog owners in our town. We're waiting patiently for our village leaders to respond." "The park district needs to deal with the fact that a dog park is more important to Northbrook …
