The boys that made up Glenbrook North's 2011 varsity lacrosse team were more than just a group of kids and coaches. They were a large, driven and successful family.
"Family" has long been the mantra of Glenbrook North's athletic teams, but perhaps no one has embraced and grown from that mentality quite like the Spartans' 2011 boys varsity lacrosse team. Under the tutelage of fifth year head coach Justin Georgacakis, the Spartans produced the second most wins in program history along with a host of individual accolades that led to a 15-4 record and a post-season victory as the sixth seed in the IHSLA A-Class Playoffs. "As a coach, to be a part of a team that was perfect in so many ways - the way they carried themselves, the way they spoke, the way they worked, how they bought into this family idea - it was a very special season to be a part of," said Georgacakis, also known as Geo. "If you work and put…

Class of 2011 celebrates a new stage in their lives.
Before a packed auditorium, Glenbrook North's graduating senior class celebrated their achievements and looked forward to what comes next. In remarks, several students and administrators reflected upon the time the class of 2011 spent at GBN. Students Kaela West and Sammy Middleton addressed those in attendance, as well as GBN Principal Paul Pryma and Superintendent Dr. Michael Riggle. Glenbrook North's Choir and Senior Choir also sang several songs, including the school's Alma Mater. "I've had a lot of them all four years," commented German teacher Tamara Byrne. "It's nice to see them grow up. I don't worry about them being prepared anymore."

Glenbrook North fell 8-1 to rival Glenbrook South on Thursday in the New Trier Sectional Semifinals.
After matching five hits with five errors against No. 2 seed Glenbrook South on Thursday, Glenbrook North's softball team watched its season come to a close. The No. 6-seeded Spartans fell to the rival Titans 8-1 in the IHSA Class 4A New Trier Sectional Semifinals at Duke Childs Field in Winnetka, just one win away from earning a rematch with top-seeded New Trier, who had eliminated the Spartans in each of the previous two seasons. "They're good hitters - they really are," GBN head coach Jenn Mau said of her Spartans (16-11-1). "We had the same amount of hits as they did, but obviously the runs didn't show the same. "It's kind of hard to win games when you have as many errors as you do hits, but these girls came out here and fought like …

Glenbrook North loses rematch with New Trier in straight sets in sectional championship game.
Glenbrook North's boys volleyball team already had one victory over the state-ranked New Trier Trevians this season, but in order to get to state, the Spartans needed another. Unfortunately, New Trier had an answer for everything the Spartans threw their way Tuesday night, and with the help of 19 Glenbrook North (GBN) hitting errors, the rematch went to the Trevians who took home the Niles North Sectional Championship in straight sets, 25-19, 25-22. "It was night and day from the first time we played them," said New Trier head coach Sue Ellen Haak. "The first time around, we didn't play our game at all. Everything we showed was nothing we ever do, so we had a lot of room to improve. "But you know what? That was two months ago," she said. "…

Glenbrook North's boys volleyball team downed Hersey in straight sets (25-18, 25-18) on Friday night at Niles North to advance to Tuesday's Sectional Final against New Trier.
No. 2 Glenbrook North's straight set victory (25-18, 25-18) over the No. 6 Hersey Huskies in Friday's Niles North Sectional Semifinal could be described as dominant or seamless, but certainly not satisfying. According to the Spartans (30-8), satisfaction won't be felt until Tuesday night, when the team faces New Trier with the chance to advance to the state finals at Hoffman Estates High School. "We're definitely not satisfied yet," senior captain and libero Connor Bolan assured. "One of our goals in the preseason was to get to state and we had a feeling that New Trier was going to be in the way, so this is a huge match coming up." After watching New Trier roll through Glenbrook South in the night's first semifinal, the Spartans needed …

GBN's boys lacrosse team polished off the regular season with a 7-5 road win over Palatine on Thursday, spoiling senior night activities for the Pirates.
Despite jumping out to an early 3-1 lead, Palatine's boys lacrosse team watched the visiting Glenbrook North Spartans score four unanswered goals across three periods to claim a 7-5 victory, spoiling the Pirates' senior night at Chic Anderson Stadium. Thursday's contest marked the final regular season game for each school. "We came out and did what we needed to do to get the 'W' today," said GBN assistant coach Mike Synek. "We've had a strong season so far, so it's good for the kids to come out and get this last win, especially on the road. "It's always good to go into the playoffs with a win." Glenbrook North (14-3), which finished the year on a four-game winning streak, received four goals and one assist from sophomore Ryan Maksimovic, …

Glenbrook North avenged its only conference loss in a 25-23, 25-20 win.
This year Glenbrook North has had a different player take the starring role in seemingly every game. Scott Schwartz filled the bill Thursday night against Niles North in the Spartans’ 25-23, 25-20 win. Schwartz, a senior middle hitter, led GBN with eight kills in a big Central Suburban League North win. The Spartans (23-8) avenged their only CSL North loss and improved to 7-1 in the conference. This win, coupled with Tuesday’s sweep at Highland Park, puts GBN all alone at the top of the league. Schwartz played big in the middle, factoring in three blocks, and mixed it up with powerful spikes and effective dinks. Despite the big stats, he deferred credit to the team’s defense. “I think that our defense really stepped up which allowed for …

Centerfielder Rachel Blitt threw out Laurie Polisky at home in the bottom of the seventh to preserve Glenbrook North's 3-1 win at Deerfield.
The Deerfield and Glenbrook North softball teams haven’t been outside much lately, and the cold weather made it hard for the hitters at Thursday's Central Suburban League North contest. So it was fitting that the key play late in the game came on the defensive side. With the Warriors trailing by two in the bottom of the seventh, Jessica Rutstein stepped up to the plate with runners on first and second and one out. Rutstein blasted a single up the middle, but junior Rachel Blitt made a perfect throw from center field and catcher Alena Marovitz applied the tag on Laurie Polisky at home. Pitcher Jenny McTague got Emily Shanker to ground out to third to end the game and seal the Spartans’ 3-1 win in the game at Deerfield. “It was a do or die …

Timely hitting along with Alex Hermeling's 13 strikeouts pushed Glenbrook North past Deerfield 3-2 on Thursday afternoon in Northbrook.
Glenbrook North starter Alex Hermeling wasn't on top of his game, yet the Louisiana-Monroe bound right-hander struck out 13 batters as the Spartans remained unbeaten against in-state opponents, defeating rival Deerfield 3-2 in Northbrook on Thursday in the CSL North opener for both schools. "I thought Alex did a great job of competing today," said GBN head coach Dominic Savino. "He probably didn't have his best stuff, relative to what we've seen earlier in the year, but the thing that I absolutely loved was how hard he went out there and competed. He gave us six real strong innings." Hermeling, who has struck out 25 batters in his last 13 innings, allowed two runs on just three hits with one walk before junior Peter Resnick fanned a pair …

Six Spartans combined for 26 kills and Glenbrook North's boys' volleyball team upset area-ranked New Trier in straight sets (25-20, 25-16) on Friday night in Northbrook.
Glenbrook North's boys' volleyball team has yet to crack any top-ten poll. But after Friday's dismantling of area-ranked New Trier, perhaps the Spartans will finally be given the respect their play demands. Behind a balanced offense and near-flawless defense, Glenbrook North (10-3) made quick work of the visiting Trevians, snapping New Trier's seven-match winning streak in consecutive sets (25-20, 25-16) in Northbrook. "We started spreading the ball around to every one of our guys, and we played really good defense," said Spartans' head coach Chris Cooper. "If you can play good defense and pass well, you can stay in any match, and when we do that, we're pretty good. Rankings this early in the season don't always tell the story." Though …
