HOCKEY: Spartans Beat Coach's Former Team

Glenbrook North beat St. Viator, where coach Evan Poulakidas coached for the last three years 2-1.

Evan Poulakidas coached St. Viator hockey for three years, but now the role was flipped. Poulakidas, now the Glenbrook North coach, had to face his former players. The Spartans came out on top 2-1 in come-from-behind fashion with two goals in the third period to beat Viator at Vernon Hills’ Glacier Ice Arena. The win all but sealed the Metro North for the GBN, but that’s not what Poulakidas was thinking of after the game. “It’s hard because I have some really wonderful memories there and some great relationships,” Poulakidas said. “When I look across, truthfully if we can’t win I hope they win. I love that school, I love what it’s about, what it stands for and the kids are terrific kids.” Still, it was a hockey game between two league …

North Whips South in Annual Thanksgiving Hockey Game

Glenbrook North dominated rival Glenbrook South 6-0 in front of a packed house at the Glenview Ice Center.

It took Glenbrook North a period to get going, but once the Spartans started rolling there wasn’t much Glenbrook South could do to stop them. Glenview Ice Center filled up long before the puck dropped, but only the visiting fans had much to cheer about. After a scoreless first period the Spartans ran away with the annual day before Thanksgiving rivalry game to pick up a 6-0 win over the host Titans. Junior Ryan Maksimovic broke the deadlock with 11:59 left in the second period and assisted on the second goal to seize control for the Spartans. Eric Anderson and Garrison Sanipass each scored a pair of goals and John Gauger netted one. “I wasn’t really expecting that big of a win, but I mean it was awesome,” Maksimovic said. “I put in the …

GBN Hockey Hopes to Replicate Last Year's Success

A season removed from being state runner-up, the Spartans have lost just one game in the last 17.

A year ago the Glenbrook North boys hockey team made it all the way to the state final, leaving big shoes to fill. This year’s Spartans are still talented, but the graduations of four all-staters, Jack Day, Tommy Washburn, Sam Katz and goaltender Troy Carroll, made for a transition period in the beginning of the year. Throw in a new coach and it’s no wonder GBN is just now getting into a groove. After opening the season against a number of top teams the Spartans were just 2-5-2 in September. GBN is 14-1-2 since following a 1-1 tie against Prairie Ridge Tuesday in Northbrook. “I think we’re really starting to hit our stride,” first-year coach Evan Poulakidas said after the Prairie Ridge game. “It’s a good time to hit your stride. Early on …

GBN Hockey Beats St. Viator in Must-Win Game

The Spartans won 2-0 in Rolling Meadows to keep pace in the Metro North.

John Boidanis hasn’t scored many goals this season, but he picked a good time to get one. Boidanis’ goal and a late empty netter were all the scoring Glenbrook North needed in a crucial 2-0 Metro North win over St. Viator at the West Meadows Ice Arena. The win pushes the Spartans (30-4-9, 12-1-6) into second place by themselves and keeps them within a point of Metro North leader Stevenson with three conference games to play. Troy Carroll was terrific in goal, making 27 saves for the team’s tenth shutout of the season. “We still got a chance to win the league,” Carroll said. “Big win. We just need Stevenson to drop a point.” It was a defensive battle throughout with Glenbrook North playing its usual patient style and St. Viator refusing to …

Top 10 Spartan Moments of 2010

Taking a look back at the best 10 (OK, 11) accomplishments of the year for Glenbrook North athletics.

10. Boys Volleyball: Spartans go undefeated in conference play in all levels The GBN boys' volleyball team has had its fair share of success in the Central Suburban League (CSL) North over the years, but to go 10-0 at all four levels of play is an impressive feat. The varsity squad also took a regional title and advanced to the sectional final before losing to Maine South, who went undefeated in the regular season. 9. Baseball: Alex Hermeling's one-hitter against Niles West Hermeling took a no-hitter into the sixth against the Wolves before surrendering a hit with two outs. The Spartans won 8-1, the lone run against Hermeling was unearned, and Hermeling pitched a complete game. Hermeling recently signed to play for The University of …

Hockey Community Faces Off With Brain Cancer

Glenbrook North players old and young came together for an alumni game with guest of honor and former player Phil Fisher, who is currently battling brain cancer.

The Northbrook hockey community is a tightly knit group. That's why it is no surprise that they came together to honor former Glenbrook North (GBN) hockey player Phil Fisher at the annual alumni game Saturday night. Before the game began, word was that Fisher, who has brain cancer, had a low white blood cell count and might not be able to stay for the entire game. All those images in your head about a struggling cancer patient? Get rid of them. That's not Phil Fisher. You wouldn't know he is in the midst of a battle for his life by looking at him or by talking to him. In fact, the 32-year-old father of two has hockey on his mind—specifically the state final some 15 years ago. He said he still holds a grudge against rival high school New …

Spartan Roundup Dec. 20

Girls gymnastics picks up conference win; basketball teams prepare for holiday tournaments.

Boys basketball: The hoops squad remained undefeated with a 40-27 conference win at Highland Park. Peter Szostak had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Once again, the Spartans' size advantage was a big reason behind their success.  GBN (8-0, 3-0) has a week off before competing in the loaded Proviso West Holiday Tournament. The boys will face Morton in the first round. Among the 16-team field, GBN is one of seven teams in the top 20 of both the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times rankings. Girls basketball:  The tough season continued for the girls with a 55-30 loss Friday night to Highland Park. Junior guard Nora O'Neill led the team with 12 and Rachel Blitt had 10. The girls are 1-11 on the year. Inexperience and injuries have made it an …

Spartans Roundup Dec. 13

Glenbrook North boys basketball team stays undefeated, but wrestling and girls basketball suffer setbacks.

Boys basketball: The Spartans opened conference play with wins over Niles North and Deerfield to boost their record to 7-0. They edged the Vikings Tuesday on a Joe Prince buzzer beater to win 74-71 and got big contributions from Jordan Liss and Adam Chick in a 58-41 win at Deerfield Friday. Wrestling: The grapplers were dominated by Deerfield in a 57-6 loss. This severely dented the Spartans' chance of winning conference, but coach Mark Rebora still hopes the team can win its remaining three conference duals. Jim Flanaghan and Jim McPike were the only winners for GBN. The Spartans are 1-1 in Central Suburban League North meets. Girls basketball: The girls suffered a pair of road defeats this week, losing 58-51 at Niles North and 56-37 at …

Glenbrook North Tops South in Back and Forth Hockey Game

Spartan hockey picked up a 6-3 win over their rivals at packed Glenview Ice Center.

With a full house and terrific atmosphere, rivals Glenbrook North and South played a hockey game worthy of the setting. In a back and forth game that featured three ties, the Spartans pulled out a 6-3 win Wednesday night at the Glenview Ice Center. South struck blood first when a deflected puck bounced high in front of goalie Troy Carroll's net. After a scrum for the puck, the Titans stuffed it in to take a 1-0 lead with 4:32 left in the first period. "I thought we started a little bit slow, but there's so much emotion with the big crowd and all of their friends here and guys they used to play with and the alumni and all the excitement," GBN coach Mark Brunner said. "The first goal was just an unlucky bounce. Those things happen in hockey…

GBN Hockey Dominates Neuqua Valley

The Spartans picked up a 7-1 win in a HIT game.

After a tough stretch in its schedule, Glenbrook North hockey is back on track. The Spartans routed Neuqua Valley 7-1 Tuesday night at the Northbrook Sports Center as part of the High School Invitational Tournament (HIT). GBN (14-0-5) had a stretch of four straight ties against top league foes and traditional powers, but the win over Neuqua was the Spartans' third straight by three or more goals. "We had a pretty tough stretch," said GBN coach Mark Brunner. "We tried to figure out a few things on our breakout to create a little more space. We were able to hit some of those today early in the game when we weren't playing real well." The first goal came less than 90 seconds into the game when Jack Day made a beautiful pass to Tommy Washburn …
