Glenbrook North and South 31st and 32nd Most Challenging IL Schools

The 'Washington Post' figures are based on number of college-level tests given at a school in 2011 divided by the number of graduates that year.

A national ranking confirms what many Glenbrook North and South students already know: both are challenging schools. But not as challenging as others. According to The High School Challenge, released recently by the Washington Post, North and South came in 31st and 32nd respectively among Illinois high schools. Fifty-six schools were studied. Nationwide, however, Glenbrook North came in 1074 and Glenbrook South ranks 1100 out of more than 1,900 schools in the study. Okay, so how did these rankings come about? Well the paper applied a simple formula: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or other college-level tests a school gave in 2010 divided by the number of graduating seniors. It's not the only rankings that …

According to US News, GBN is number 19 in Illinois. Doesn't seem to add up with the data from The High School Challenge. I think I will go with the rank 19. http://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/illinois/districts/northfield-twp-hsd-225/glenbrook-north-high-school-6900   more ›

Dold Takes Students on Field Trip

Twenty-two area high school students watch UL test fire safety by burning houses as they view application of STEM education.

STEM education has been a passion of Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) since he was elected to Congress. Monday, he took 22 area high school students on a field trip to Underwriters Laboratories (UL) in Northbrook and three other sites to prove his point. Dold often touts the importance of educating young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to ease their way into the modern job market. At UL, the subject came alive in front of the students. “It was great seeing it in action,” Glenbrook South student Rohan Shah said. “We learn about this in school, but it was cool to see it was really applicable.” What the students saw at the UL facility was how the scientists and engineers test furniture to determine how …

STEM reminds me of stem cell research, an issue Congressman Dold would likely never endorse with a vote on the floor of the House, but he does exploit kids for a story. Here we sit in Lake County, part of the IL-10 district, and this lightweight (disguised as a moderate) Congressman chooses to take a few kids to a place where they blow things up. UL does great work to promote safety and save …   more ›
