Glenbrook North beat Glenbrook South for the first time in eight years at Friday night's varsity football game.
Grant Rushing's 16 yard run with 44.7 seconds remaining gave Glenbrook North football the 21-14 lead over Glenbrook South to earn the Spartans their first victory against rival Titans in eight years, the Northbrook Star reports. GBS (1-2) quarterback Max Cohen connected a 41-yard pass with Brett Laurie for the game's first touchdown, but GBN (2-1) tied the game on the next drive with a 67-yard pass to Nick Cox. A second touchdown gave the Spartans a 14-7 lead before halftime. With 7:02 remaining in the game, Titans' QB threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Cody Carroll for the game's second tie, until Rushing's game winning run. The following nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 2 - Jan. 8, are: Mychael Henley, senior, basketball guard, Niles North – Henley scored 23 points and collected five rebounds in the Vikings’ 67-52 win over Uplift last week. The senior guard had missed much of the early season with a wrist injury. Alex Sacks, senior, basketball, Deerfield – Sacks scored a game-high 19 points in the Warriors’ 67-52 non-conference victory over Wheeling. Glenbrook North dominated rival Glenbrook South 6-0 in front of a packed house at the Glenview Ice Center.
It took Glenbrook North a period to get going, but once the Spartans started rolling there wasn’t much Glenbrook South could do to stop them. Glenview Ice Center filled up long before the puck dropped, but only the visiting fans had much to cheer about. After a scoreless first period the Spartans ran away with the annual day before Thanksgiving rivalry game to pick up a 6-0 win over the host Titans. Junior Ryan Maksimovic broke the deadlock with 11:59 left in the second period and assisted on the second goal to seize control for the Spartans. Athlete of the Week for Oct. 31 - Nov. 6: Peter Pujals ran away with North Shore's first contest for Patch Athlete of the Week. More than 2,300 readers voted last week, but the junior football player from Loyola Academy received 1233 votes, capturing 54 percent of the total. (See results below) The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Oct. 31- Nov. 6, were: Peter Pujals, junior, football wide receiver, Loyola Academy and this week’s winner – Pujals had the best game of his career, catching nine passes for 181 yards in Loyola’s 29-0 win over Dunbar in the second round of the playoffs. The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Oct. 31- Nov. 6: Alexis Melchiorre, senior, girls swimming, Deerfield – Melchiorre helped lead Deerfield to a third consecutive Central Suburban League North swimming championship last weekend. The senior won the 50 freestyle in 24.74 seconds and doubled up by taking first place in the 100 free (54.55). Melchiorre was also the anchor for the Warriors’ 400 free relay team that edged Glenbrook North for the win. Leland Later, senior, boys cross country, New Trier – Later became only the third New Trier cross country state champion in the school’s history by winning the Class 3A state title in Peoria last weekend. Later completed the three-mile course in 14 minutes, 17 seconds.The …
