Groupon Inc. has canceled all its firearm-related offers a month after the school massacre in Newtown, Conn., the LA Times reported. “All scheduled and current gun-related deals featured on Groupon North America, including shooting ranges, conceal-and-carry and clay shooting, have been placed on hiatus while we review internal standards that shape the deal inventory we feature, “ Groupon spokeswoman Julie Mossler in a statement issued to various media outlets. Self-described 'serial entrepreneur' Eric Lefkofsky speaks to Northbrook Chamber of Commerce.

I'm a sucker for deal sites, apps and email lists. Do I really need half off of $16 in comic books, a Valentine's Day gift of a photography class, discount movie tickets and an absolute steal on a service that will convert my Hi8 videos into DVDs? The answer is yes. (Or, mostly yes. I have still have to find my Hi8 video cassettes.) With the huge boom in deal sites led by Groupon and LivingSocial, it was only a matter of time until someone started aggregating all the coupons and deals in one place. The Yipit mobile app offers a clever, interactive solution. Earlier: Finding the Best Mobile Apps for Your Needs Not only can you sign up for Yipit like any other deal service, but you can also search by category and location. Taking advantage of the iPhone's "Where am I now?" functionality, Yipit can show daily deals near you. The rub for suburbanites: Deals are much more dense the closer you get to the city. Competitors look to get a jump on Groupon with local offers tailored to suburban customers.
Since Groupon launched in 2008, the Chicago-based company has gathered 1.4 million users in the city and surrounding suburbs. It’s also inspired new startups offering deals to customers throughout the North Shore. The Highland Park-based WeDeal launched in April. The site offers daily deals, and users get $5 off the discounted price if they get a friend to buy too. “I was born and raised here in the North Shore,” said founder and CEO Jordan Heller. “At the time that I launched here, there was no deal-a-day site in the suburbs focusing on the North Shore. Good for Groupon! Perhaps this is a good way to convince the gun sellers that they should accept some "common sense" gun laws in their repertoire. What is needed is more commercial pressure on the gun sellers of America that convinces them that most of the American people think that gun ownership of assault rifles is unnecessary. more ›
