Patch wants to know what you think of companies distancing themselves from gun-related business? Join our discussion in the comment section below.
Groupon Inc. has canceled all its firearm-related offers a month after the school massacre in Newtown, Conn., the LA Times reported. “All scheduled and current gun-related deals featured on Groupon North America, including shooting ranges, conceal-and-carry and clay shooting, have been placed on hiatus while we review internal standards that shape the deal inventory we feature, “ Groupon spokeswoman Julie Mossler in a statement issued to various media outlets. The Chicago-based daily deals company is not the first business to distance themselves from gun-related businesses. Dick’s Sporting Goods pulled some firearms off its stores’ shelves, while private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management sold its stake in the firearm conglomerate …

Self-described 'serial entrepreneur' Eric Lefkofsky speaks to Northbrook Chamber of Commerce.
Standing before a crowd of local business owners in Northbrook, Groupon founder and director Eric Lefkofsky extolled the value of failure. “I can only learn by doing something and failing,” said Lefkofsky, who is 42. “You can’t tell me to avoid a pothole, I have to drive it.” The Glencoe resident and Michigan native appeared at the Northbrook Chamber of Commerce’s annual dinner and meeting on Tuesday, the same day that a shareholder sued Groupon for misstating its profits, and four days after the company issued a restatement of its earnings, claiming a “material weakness” because it had not set aside enough money for customer refunds. A self-described “serial entrepreneur,” Lefkofsky warmed up an audience of several hundred at the …

Which deal apps to you prefer? Shopping for gifts online, just in time for Valentine's Day.
I'm a sucker for deal sites, apps and email lists. Do I really need half off of $16 in comic books, a Valentine's Day gift of a photography class, discount movie tickets and an absolute steal on a service that will convert my Hi8 videos into DVDs? The answer is yes. (Or, mostly yes. I have still have to find my Hi8 video cassettes.) Right now, there's a huge market for daily deal apps, so this week I'm offering quick-hit reviews of apps currently on my iPhone. And, I'm asking our readers: Which apps do you use and why? Groupon ...is the 800-lb gorilla in the room, and with good reason. The app is easy to use, connects with my credit card and keeps track of my coupons. The quality of the deals themselves vary, but I still check it almost …

Aggregating the best of deal sites, the Yipit mobile app lets you find deals near you.
With the huge boom in deal sites led by Groupon and LivingSocial, it was only a matter of time until someone started aggregating all the coupons and deals in one place. The Yipit mobile app offers a clever, interactive solution. Earlier: Finding the Best Mobile Apps for Your Needs Not only can you sign up for Yipit like any other deal service, but you can also search by category and location. Taking advantage of the iPhone's "Where am I now?" functionality, Yipit can show daily deals near you. The rub for suburbanites: Deals are much more dense the closer you get to the city. (See the slideshow for examples.) Still, it's worth it. Yipit aggregates 802 daily coupon sites, with more coming online. (Patch has its own Patch Deals, and Amazon …

Competitors look to get a jump on Groupon with local offers tailored to suburban customers.
Since Groupon launched in 2008, the Chicago-based company has gathered 1.4 million users in the city and surrounding suburbs. It’s also inspired new startups offering deals to customers throughout the North Shore. The Highland Park-based WeDeal launched in April. The site offers daily deals, and users get $5 off the discounted price if they get a friend to buy too. “I was born and raised here in the North Shore,” said founder and CEO Jordan Heller. “At the time that I launched here, there was no deal-a-day site in the suburbs focusing on the North Shore. Groupon was operating in the city, but most people in the suburbs weren’t going to go into the city for a massage.” When WeDeal started it had just 900 subscribers. “I was scared to death …

PayLessNow offers customers discounts at local businesses.
It didn’t take very long for Chicago-based Groupon to gain widespread success. The website offers huge discounts to businesses around the country. But how convenient are the daily deals for North Shore residents? “A person is not going to drive from Northbrook to Chicago to save $10 on dinner,” Anthony Berg said, which is why he created another website that’s geared to those living in the northern suburbs of Chicago. PayLessNow.com’s concept is similar to Groupons, but Berg noted users have a lot more options in their surrounding areas. “No matter what you’re looking for, or where you are right now, you’ll generally be able to find something on PayLessNow.com.” The process is easy. Participants log on, type in their zip codes, and a map…

Good for Groupon! Perhaps this is a good way to convince the gun sellers that they should accept some "common sense" gun laws in their repertoire. What is needed is more commercial pressure on the gun sellers of America that convinces them that most of the American people think that gun ownership of assault rifles is unnecessary.   more ›
