Hyungseok Koh Proceeds With Federal Suit Against Police

After a Cook County jury found Koh not guilty in the 2009 death of his son Paul, the Koh family is moving forward with a civil suit against Northbrook police.

The family of Hungseok Koh has filed a federal lawsuit against eight Northbrook poilce officers and one Wheeling police officer for violating Koh's constitutional rights after Koh's 2009 arrest in the investigation of his son's death, the Northbrook Star reports. The suit accuses police of false arrest, coercive interrogation, demands a jury trial and judgement of $100,000 compensatory damages, $50,000 punitive damages, plus attorneys’ fees and cost, the Northbrook Star reports. Hyungseok Koh was found not guilty by a Cook County jury Monday on all counts related to the death of his 22-year-old son, Paul Koh, in 2009, the Chicago Tribune reports.  Koh had allegedly confessed to the murder, but his lawyer sowed doubt in the jurors' …

Who killed Paul, good question for the Northbrook Police to answer. Are they now actively re-investigating this case since the time Paul's father was found innocent by the jury? Place a call to the police!   more ›

Jury Finds Hyungseok Koh Not Guilty in Son's Murder

Koh was accused of killing his 22-year-old son, Paul Koh, in 2009.

Hyungseok Koh was found not guilty by a Cook County jury Monday on all counts related to the death of his 22-year-old son, Paul Koh, in 2009, the Chicago Tribune reports.  Koh had allegedly confessed to the murder, but his lawyer sowed doubt in the jurors' minds that Koh, whose native language is Korean, fully understood what police were asking him, the article says.  The alleged confession came while Koh was in police custody shortly after his son's April 16, 2009 death, when Paul Koh was found stabbed in the doorway of the Kohs’ Birch Road home. Northbrook Police responded to the Koh residence around 3:44 a.m. that day after Hyungseok Koh called 911. When they arrived, Koh ran out of his garage door screaming, then brought officers to …

I have a feeling we all know who the "person" is. Is the mental illness that he smoked marijuana? If so, there are 1000s of kids in NBK with the same mental illness. That should have no relation to the fact that someone slit his throat. You can't call that suicide if that is indeed what you are referring to.   more ›

Status Hearing in Koh Murder Case Scheduled for Thursday

Monday's scheduled trial has been post-poned in the case of a Northbrook man accused of killing his son.

Defense attorneys for Hyungseok Koh, a Northbrook man accused of fatally stabbing his 22-year-old son Paul in 2009, have filed motions to include nine expert witnesses in the jury trial, which delayed Monday's scheduled trial, the Northbrook Star reports.  In response, State's attorneys filed motions to bar or limit these witnesses, Andrew Conklin, spokesman for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, told the Star. A status meeting for the case is set for Thursday, Sept. 13 in Skokie under Judge Garritt Howard.  Northbrook Police arrested Hyungseok Koh in April 2009 after his son was found stabbed in the family’s home. Since then, Koh's attorneys filed a federal lawsuit alleging that Northbrook police violated Koh's Constitutional …

They say innocent until proven guilty. With no evidence of Mr. Koh's involvement in Paul's death, we hope that justice will be served and Mr. Koh will be given his freedom. When the family ran out of funds to further support attorneys this defense team heard of this case and has been working pro-bono after reviewing this case. They flew in from other states and are staying here in Illinois in …   more ›

Tentative Date for Koh Murder Trial Set for September

Status hearing in the case set for 9:30 a.m. Friday.

A Northbrook man who has been imprisoned since his arrest in 2009 for murdering his son could stand trial as early as mid-September, a Cook County state's attorney's office official said last week. Hyungseok Koh is expected in court at 9:30 a.m. Friday for a status hearing in Skokie District 2 Court before Judge Garritt Howard. A date for the start of his trial is set for Sept. 10 but that date is just that "tentative," the state's attorney's office official said. Koh, 58, has been in Cook County Jail since police arrested him on April 16, 2009 when he was accused of killing his son, Paul Koh, then 22. Attorneys for the state allege that Koh stabbed Paul to death in the doorway of the family’s Northbrook home. Since then, Koh's attorneys …

I too do not think this guy was treated fairly. Based on his confession video, this guy did not even understand the what Miranda rights were, and the English-Korean translator's words weren't even translated correctly. The justice should be served, and the police in the community should really learn how to do their jobs correctly.   more ›

Psychiatrist Questions Alleged Confession By Northbrook Man Accused of Murdering His Son

Attorneys for Hyungseok Koh, 58, hope to suppress a confession he allegedly made while in police custody.

A Northbrook man who allegedly confessed to his son’s murder sat listening intently in court Monday, as a psychiatrist told the judge that the man was “in no position” to give a voluntary statement about how his son had died.     Hyungseok Koh, 58, allegedly confessed to stabbing his then 22-year-old son Paul Koh in April 2009. Now facing murder charges in Cook County Circuit Court’s Second District, Koh has pleaded not guilty and is currently being held in Cook County Jail on $5 million bond. The alleged confession occurred while he was in police custody after Paul Koh’s death, according to court documents. In support of a motion to suppress the confession as evidence, Koh’s attorneys brought psychiatrist Robert Galatzer-Levy as a witness…
